The spy who came in from the cold. - They must be gloomy and pessimistic and always a little anachronistic. The KGB has largely played off as opponents and there are hardly any German villains left, but the modern agent films perceive the changed world political coordinates in order to be more exotic than in the 60s: The Arab world, the African continent or South America are the operational areas. Mostly rogue rulers and their nasty secret service, which must be fought, rage there. There are scary agents with dark skin and so that all this does not seem too racist, the suffering population is also shown who must be helped. The agent thriller has always made use of good literary models such as The constant gardener or The quiet American, besides the film Noir it is the most distinguished form of the thriller. Both have broken heroes with a past in common, because the shining hero is not suitable for the profession of an agent who veils and lies professionally. John Frankenheimer found in Ronin the fitting image of the samurai who is forced to vagabond alone without a permanent employer. In fact, unlike in the Cold War, the modern agent is much less active for one side and thus degraded to a loner. Masterpieces like the furiously told Syriana, the icy Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) and the perverse danger and desire are legitimate successors of quiet classics like The spy who came in from the cold. The Bourne series or Brian de Palma's Mission impossible, on the other hand, could be the grandchildren of James Bond. But these action-heavy baller flicks are rather the exception in a genre that traditionally comes across very seriously.
