Etwa so funktioniert The Traitor. - Mafia don Tommaso Buscetta (Pierfrancesco Favino), the elegantly dressed gentleman with impeccable manners, was not the main character in the great drama about the Cosa Nostra in Sicily in the early 80s. He was neither the most powerful Don on the island, nor did he kill 40 people single-handedly, including women and children (I am alluding to Don Toto Riina). But Tommaso is the main character in this latest political drama by Italian New Wave maestro Marco Bellocchio. For Tommaso caused a sensation with his comprehensive testimony in the spectacular "Maxi Trial", when he accused 360 mafiosos as a witness. He is the great traitor, Il Traditore, of Sicily. The film of the same name now tries to do this with its own dry, even absurd humour. A humour that takes getting used to, because the events in Palermo seem surrealistic to us today. It's not about the fact that afterwards a political storm swept over Tommaso. Above all, The Traitor deals with all the events around his statement. How has Tommaso's environment shaped his character? I think Marco Bellocchio's film is about the all-too-human comedy of a ridiculous man. Unfortunately, there is already another classic from Italy called that. Around 1980 Tommaso tries to leave the mob behind him. With his family he wants to emigrate to Brazil. His sons, however, are murdered by rival clans, while Tommaso and his wife Cristina (Maria Fernanda Candido) are tortured in Brazil and sent back to Italy. In Palermo, he is offered a deal: he can testify in court or die in his cell. During the trial hundreds of mafiosi sat in cages like animals. They smoked (for the sake of their health), roared, exposed themselves. In contrast to Tommaso, who carefully applies shoe polish thick hair colour to his greying parting, they look like freaks. What kind of person is Tommaso? We just don't understand. He tries to explain to Judge Falcone (Fausto Russo Alesi) that there is no such thing as the "Mafia" at all. Only the "Cosa Nostra". And this organization is also not what it used to be. Because they are not the working class collective that they think they are. They are not??? This is roughly how The Traitor works. Deep in the microcosm of this gangster and outside of any genre conventions. We have to engage with his psyche, which is very difficult to fathom. Welcome to the remote island world of Tommaso!
