- Here comes a bow to a dying way of life: traditional agriculture. And it is not only in Spain that farmers are losing their livelihoods! Alcarras by Carla Simon has become a neo-realist work, staged with amateur actresses from the region. So the milieu in Alcarras is excellently captured - but (ashes on my head); it lacks a bit of tension. The sense of moral urgency that characterises the models from Italy. Enter landowner Pinyol (Jacob Diarte), who sells the land that the Quimet family has farmed since the Spanish Civil War to speculators. Many local landowners acted similarly. Henceforth, a start-up for solar energy is to operate there. Now we see how the Quimets defiantly take part in protests, while the mother tries to deal more pragmatically with the loss of the farm. The family's existence is at stake, but cinematically we experience a kind of standstill. Is this due to the sluggish camera work? Alcarras lacks drama, but the film creates a detailed portrait of this family, with lively characters. A family that lives the way no one will live in the future. A homage, but without revolutionary rage.
