- The whole work of Leos Carax is about truth and lies. And in many cases, because of these opposites, no distinction is made at all! Are theater and drama lies? After all, they are about invented worlds with people pretending to be someone else. However: The theater is just as much a place of truth-finding. Maybe even the only place, someone like Leos Carax would remark. Truth is never beautiful. It hurts and often it seems silly and unfair. That's why truth is often rejected in real life, not so in theater and certainly not by Leos Carax. That's exactly how his sixth feature film Annette, which is obviously a rock opera, works. I can recall a single continuous dialogue. On the whole, Annette is a very exuberant and exhilarating experience. Kind of like a musical. A campy melodrama with supernatural elements. but often Annette seems dark and self-destructive, with uncontrollable emotions. It is such emotions that no dialogue could express, only singing. Because that's how musicals work, with emotions so strong that they can only be expressed through song and dance. (Unfortunately, modern musicals tend to forget this fact and cheat their way around it: around the REINE musical). It seems artificial when there is singing in the middle of a scene. It is artificial and we have to accept that! What we always find a bit difficult, Leos Carax likes. And all his actors accept this idea of the musical. Adam Driver plays Henry McHenry, a standup comedian whose performances are like more of a performance overall. Henry is antisocial and angry and provocative. At least on stage. And what is this Henry like in real life? That is precisely one of the exciting questions in Annette. Why he became a comedian, Henry is asked, "To disarm people." It's the only way to tell the truth. Henry has fallen in love with soprano Ann Defrasnoux (Marion Cotillard). To the tabloid press, the two make an unlikely and only the more interesting couple. Again and again the film is interrupted to discuss that very relationship. Their love is obsessive and striking as they disappear into the night on a motorcycle and have passionate sex. Henry's comedy, however, is based on disgust and revulsion. He hates himself and his audience. And he's jealous! Meanwhile, Ann has hallucinations of Henry in yesterday's man situations. She wonders if you can ever really know a person? And so Henry, accused by several women, torches his entire career in a self-destructive act. He obliterates himself, and while he destroys himself, Ann's star rises.... We know such elements from other musicals. When two partners struggle to keep their balance; When one is less successful than the other.... In almost 40 years, Carax has made only a handful of films. Even in his early 20s, many thought he was at his zenith with Boy Meets Girl (and were all the more disappointed afterwards). He made horribly expensive flops, which were slated at the time and can now be rediscovered in our video library. Because do you really know all of Carax's films or not yet? Time for a work show during the gray Corona time Pt. 3. Artificiality unites his films and in Annette he admits this artificiality from the beginning. In a recording studio the musicians, the artists, gather. They begin to play, leave the studio, go out into the street. Artificial it seems, but no less real. It is fake and yet much more real than the documentary reality. Because what does fake mean when you are in an act of artistic creation?
