Ich weiss nicht, weshalb ich David Bowie automatisch mit Bertold Brecht assoziiere? Vielleicht, weil beide in Berlin gelebt haben? Bowie zog 1976 dorthin. Was als Entziehungs-Urlaub geplant war, endete bekanntlich mit der Berlin Trilogie Low, Heroes und Lodger. Baal schrieb Brecht noch nicht während seiner Berliner Zeit, sondern zuvor, 1918 in Bayern - und doch brachte es beide zusammen. Es ist die Geschichte eines wandernden Poeten am Rand der Gesellschaft, durstig nach dem Leben und nach Alkohol. Wen würde Brecht wohl für Titelrolle vorschlagen, hätte er 1982 gelebt? Das exzentrische Chamäleon Bowie, bekannt für seine Heroin-Exzesse? Damit wären die Produktionsbedingungen für die BBC Verfilmung von Baal geklärt. Weniger bekannt ist, dass Bowie für die Produktion des Soundtracks gemeinsam mit seinem langjährigen Produzenten Tony Visconti nach Berlin zurück kehrte. Die EP Baal wurde wie zuvor Heroes in den Hansa Studios aufgenommen. Bowie lehnte seine Rolle an die von Allmusic’s Dave Thompson, dem "Super Punk" an. Ohne Zweifel fühlte er sich von dieser Figur angezogen. Baal und Bowie, “a side of Bowie that he had often claimed existed, but which even his closest friends had seldom seen.” Regie führte Alan Clarke, der einige der wichtigsten britischen Filme der 80er drehte und den Weg für das Punk/Hooligan Genre ebnete. Bowie Baal ist dank dieser Umstände viel näher dran an der Figur als andere Gehversuche, sich dem Stück zu nähern. Baal did not write Brecht during his time in Berlin, but before, in Bavaria in 1918 - and yet it brought the two together. It is the story of a wandering poet on the margins of society, thirsty for life and alcohol. Who would Brecht suggest for a title role if he had lived in 1982? The eccentric chameleon Bowie, known for his heroin excesses? This would clarify the production conditions for the BBC filming of Baal. What is less well known is that Bowie returned to Berlin together with his long-time producer Tony Visconti to produce the soundtrack. The EP Baal was recorded in Hansa Studios as Heroes was before. Bowie based his role on that of Allmusic's Dave Thompson, the "Super Punk". There is no doubt that he felt attracted to this figure. Baal and Bowie, "a side of Bowie that he had often claimed existed, but which even his closest friends had seldom seen." It was directed by Alan Clarke, who made some of the most important British films of the 80's and paved the way for the punk/hooligan genre. Thanks to these circumstances, Bowie Baal is much closer to the character than other walking attempts to approach the piece. Baal is also something like the 3 1/2 of his Berlin trilogy.
