Geek, weisst du, was "Kitchen Sink" Realismus ist? - Geek, do you know what "Kitchen Sink" realism is? It's a very British style of cinema that realistically approaches the lives of "ordinary" people. The closer you get to their lives visually, the more authentic! "Kitchen Sink" Realism was born during the 60s when British Free Cinema established itself. Mark Jenkin now manages to take an authentic look AND break the tradition of this realism variation. His Bait looks like an expressionistic silent film in grainy black and white. But it tells a story of gentrification and marginalization in Cornwall, the north of England. Cornwall is the home of the fisherman Martin Ward (Edward Rowe) and rich London tourists are now invading this home. Martin's parents' house is converted into a tourist resort; Martin's brother no longer fishes, but organises harbour cruises. Martin doesn't even find a place in the pub anymore, as the spoiled brats of new rich parents cavort there. Translated for us Kreuzberger: In a district where there used to be only kebab and pilsner, you now get hip food and exclusive cocktails. That's how Martin feels. Martin dreams of his own fishing boat, but his income is hardly enough to survive. And slowly the cold rage rises in him... Bait is much more than "just" a social drama. Bait is also funny and aesthetically reminiscent of the Russian and German silent film classics. The montage also seems to date from that epoch. England is divided between rich and poor. Traditional regions like Cornwall are being eroded by tourism. Guys like Martin belong to the dependents of the country. Of course we immediately think of the Brexit and we also hear about it on the radio (in the background of the film). But Bait doesn't need to take sides openly. In the end I was just as angry about the social division of the once proud country and the crazy number revue of Brexit as Martin was about the London tourists. And then I knew that I had just seen a masterpiece!
