- Here's the latest prank of the pleasantly perverse Martin McDonagh with his great duo Colin Farrell as Padraic Súilleabháin and Brendan Gleeson as Colm Doherty - the funniest team of our time! (And a little bit the two remind of the great days of silent film comedies). McDonagh's comedies are about humiliation and despair - just like the Hollywood classics of the 20s. It all starts with a beautiful shot of the island of Ireland. Everything seems quite idyllic, including the life of Padraic, a dairy farmer. Padraic lives with his sister in a modest house and checks in with his best friend Colm almost every day. But then, one day, the sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon) notices that Colm might just not like Padraic anymore. This turns out to be a prophecy, and we learn that Colm actually finds Padraic boring (we also find that his amiable conversation is somewhat limited). During the confession, Colm reveals how desperate he is (and there's more to it than that). Banshees is set in 1923, and sometimes the friends think they hear gunfire on the mainland. The conflict between Padraic and Colm may then also serve as a parable for the civil war in Ireland. However, this does not belong in the foreground! You have to see Banshees as a dark comedy, for example when Colm threatens to cut off Padraic's finger. Because remember: no one hates themselves as much as the Irish.
