Harley Davidson ist fast so alt wie das Kino, wo der Mythos der Harley seine schönsten Blüten trieb. Hollister ist der Name einer kleinen Stadt in Kalifornien, in der die Geburtsstunde des rebellierenden Bikers stattfand. Dem Strassenkampf 1947 folgte die Mythenbildung, ein Foto im Life Magazin zeigte einen der fetten Biker so, dass man davon ausgehen musste, demnächst von Barbaren überrollt zu werden. Vier Jahre später wurde die Kurzgeschichte Cyclist´s raid veröffentlicht, die den ersten richtigen Biker Filme inspirierte: The wild one. Der Film war in England bis 1968 verboten, die Sprengkraft lag aber weder in der Story noch in der leisen Gesellschaftskritik, sondern im Outfit und Auftreten der Biker. Ein richtiges Genre wurden die Biker Filme nie. Roger Corman´s The wild angels war irgendwo zwischen Western und Road Movie situiert und zog eine Welle nach sich. Sex und Gewalt waren die Hauptthemen der Exploitation Filme, die Outlaws sind mal Rassisten und mal Anti Helden auf der Seite von Minderheiten. Motorrad fahrende Amazonen stellen eine Besonderheit dar, She-devils on wheels ist die Perle unter ihnen: Als sich eine Bikerin verliebt, muss sie ihren Geliebten zur Strafe auf dem Bike hinter sich herschleifen, bis er abgenutzt aussieht. Der Angels Zyklus (Hell´sangels on wheels) wurde von alten konservativen Männern produziert, aber von jungen Wilden inszeniert: Richard Rush, Laslo Kovacs, Peter Fonda und Jack Nicholson spielen mit Formen zwischen Nouvelle Vague und Authentizität. Dennis Hoppers Easy Rider ist der berühmteste aller Bikerfilme. Die Beatnik und Hippie Philosophie stammt vom Co Autor Terry Southern und vieles vom Gewohnten wird ins Gegenteil verkehrt: Zwei umgekehrte Pioniere durchqueren die USA von West nach Ost als personifizierter amerikanischer Traum, der schliesslich sinnbildlich erschossen wird. Elektra Glide in Blue ist die Umkehrung dessen, denn diesmal wird der Cop von seiner Harley geschossen. Girl on a motorcycle ist einer der merkwürdigsten und schönsten Bikerfilme. Gefilmt von Jack Cardiff im Stil des Surrealismus, fährt Marianne Faithful zu ihrem Geliebten und die Fahrt wird zu einem stream of consciousness über Raum und Zeit, Liebe und Tod. Le belle captive von Alain Robbe-Grillets ist eine erotische Biker Vignette, ganz im Glanz der 80er. Das Underground Meisterwerk bleibt Kenneth Angers Scorpio rising, der wie ein Mosaik aus Videoclips wirkt. - Harley Davidson is almost as old as the cinema, where the myth of the Harley was born.
