In Derek Jarmans letztem Film sehen wir so wie er: Blau. Langsam verliert Jarman seine Sehkraft als Zeichen seiner Krankheit Aids. Der Soundtrack aber beschwört kraftvolle Bilder seiner mentalen, körperlichen und emotionalen Belastung hervor. 1993 konnte Jarman Blue fertigstellen, bevor er schliesslich starb. Tatsächlich kam ihm die Idee bereits 1974 als er ein Gemälde des französischen Künstlers Yves Klein betrachtete. Jarman beschloss, einen blauen Film zu machen. Tatsächlich ist die einzige Einstellung seines Films von Klein: Das Blau in Jarmans Film - ultramarine. Für Klein ist dieses Blau Ausdruck einer grenzüberschreitenden Realität, hin zum Zustand immaterieller Spiritualität. Immer war Jarman fasziniert vom Mythischen, vom Religiösen. Langsam verlor er sein Augenlicht und er erinnerte sich an das Konzept eines blauen Films. Das Drehbuch wird von Schauspielern und Jarman selbst vorgetragen. Poesie und Narration stehen nebeneinander, wobei ganz verschiedene Bedeutungen und Interpretationen möglich sind. Einige autobiographische Episoden lassen Blue sogar zu einer Art Charakter reifen. Die Musik von Simon Fisher-Turner badet in herrlichen Chorgesängen und bietet immer wieder Alltagsgeräusche wie eine tickende Uhr oder Glocken und Gongs. Darüber hinaus hören wir Musikstücke von Brian Eno, Coil und Erik Satie. 1942 wurde Jarman in Northwood geboren.
