Trailer
Jack Horner erklärt Eddie, was so ein Film überhaupt kostet. Viel Geld! Er ist die Vater-Figur einer Porno-Gemeinschaft. Jack selbst steht ausserhalb dessen. Sonst nichts. - Boogie Nights is an epic from a depraved world. From the most broken corner of Hollywood. Like in much more glamorous movies it is about fame and greed and envy. And of course sex. For the connoisseurs of the subject (we had this lecture in our video store about "The Running Screen"): Boogie Nights plays at a turning point in the porn industry. Christian Kessler's great non-fiction book "Die läufige Leinwand" describes it in a way that the makers used less psychedelic drugs and more coke. Translated: Imaginative, funny sex films became athletics. Boogie Nights starts with the hope that a porn movie could be artistic. In the end, this hope fades. All this is told through the story of Eddie Adams (Mark Wahlberg) from San Francisco. He washes the dishes in a nightclub - where he is discovered by producer Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds with Tiparillo). Discovered because of the thick print under his pants. There's something monstrous in his jeans and that's why Eddie is soon called Dirk Diggler. He is the next star of the porn industry! Does that sound like a porn story? No. There are only a few films that report so disillusioned about sexuality. Boogie Nights is very factual! Jack Horner explains to Eddie how much such a film costs. A lot of money! He is the father figure of a porn community. Jack himself stands outside of it. Like a cattle breeder, happily married. He lives with Amber Waves (Julianne Moore) and we never see them having sex. Amber has sad conversations with her ex-husband and asks to speak to her child only once. But now she is also a sex movie star and becomes a substitute mother for Eddie. Amber takes care of Eddie - while they prepare for a sex scene. Eddie himself asks Jack to name him Dirk Diggler. His real mother threw him out, screaming after him that he would end up in the alley. But Eddie knows that everyone is blessed with a special talent. His talent is under his pants. Of course everyone wants to admire his thing. Only we don't see it. Not at first. Performance Rollergirl (Heather Graham). Also she a coming star. By the way, she never takes off her roller skates. Then there's Jack's sad assistant Little Bill (William H. Macy), whose wife (and porn queen) is always doing it. Or Eddie's best friend Reed (John C. Reilly), who is mainly interested in fitness. Or Buck Swope (Don Cheadle) - a great actor from men's movies and second-rate hifi salesman. A happy family. But then, on New Year's Eve 1980, the customer says that the industry will slip into the video segment from now on. That's also a nice memory! In the past, video stores had the reputation of being better peep shows. That's why we had to make an effort to ensure that our film art bar Fitzcarraldo didn't get that kind of charisma. Anyway, Paul Thomas Anderson leads a great ensemble that would never have to shy away from comparison with a certain Robert-Altman! They may all exist in the porn world, but they have the same ambitions as "real" Hollywood stars. Boogie Nights is a living film, for long stretches one that gave me a really good mood! It's never about the Jack Horner family enjoying sex. No, they all make an art product. And Dirk Diggler's giant thing? A commodity. Nothing else. But beware: never rely on it to work forever...
