Auf einer Liste der am wenigsten bekannten Martin Scorsese Filmen müsste Bringing Out The Dead recht weit oben stehen. Das ist dann genau die Ware für mich, den Videothekar! Das ist das, was ich euch empfehlen kann, weil ihr es vermutlich noch nicht kennt! Wir hören die Stimme von Frank, dem Sanitäter. Er erklärt, dass es ihm während seiner Arbeit weniger darum ging, Leben zu retten als vielmehr Zeugnis abzuliefern. Er blickt hinab in den Abgrund des menschlichen Elends. Dort, im Abgrund, soll er nicht nur helfen, sondern auch ermutigen. Ob sie etwas Musik hätten, fragt Frank die Familie des alten Mannes, der wohl gerade an einem Herzinfarkt verstarb. Dann legt er Frank-Sinatra auf und... Nicolas Cage spielt Frank mit vor Schmerz zusammen gekniffenen Augen. Frank hat Halluzinationen von einem jungen, obdachlosen Mädchen, das er nicht retten konnte. Er sucht Erlösung für ihren Tod. So treibt er durch die nächtlichen leeren Strassen wie einst Travis-Bickle. Dampf steigt aus der Kanalisation hoch. Es muss heiss sein, dort unten. Zum Glück folgt das Drehbuch von Paul Schrader keiner offensichtlichen Handlung. Denn die Tage des Sanitäters haben weder einen Anfang, noch ein Ziel. Frank lebt in einer Art Vorhölle. Einmal hat Frank die Vision, wie er Leichen aus dem Pflaster der Strasse zieht. Er sucht die Toten zu befreien. Wie alle Scorsese Filme berührt mich "Bringing Out the Dead" tief! Nichts wirkt hier einstudiert oder abgepaust aus anderen Filmen! Allein Franks Co-Sanitäter Larry (John Goodman) ist eine Offenbarung! Larry geht mit seiner Trauer so um, dass er ständig auf der Suche ist nach seiner nächsten Mahlzeit. Sanitäter ist ein Job und man darf sich nicht unterkriegen lassen, weiss Larry. Einmal arbeitet Frank mit Marcus (Ving Rhames), einem Evangelisten, zusammen. Marcus will ihm die Macht Jesus-Christus demonstrieren und erweckt einen Toten zum Leben. Was für ein vermeintliches Wunder! Am dritten Tag, nachdem Jesus auferstand, gerät dann Sanitäter Walls (Tom Sizemore) ausser Kontrolle. Zwei Frauen hat Frank stets vor Augen. Eine heisst Rose. Ihr Gesicht blickt ihn an jeder Strassenecke an. Die Andere heisst Mary (Patricia Arquette). Früher war Mary drogenabhängig, heute ist sie clean. Frank liebt Mary, aber Bringing Out The Dead ist ganz bestimmt nicht die Sorte Film, in welcher das Mädchen dem Held am Ende in die Arme fällt. Es ist auch keine echte Liebe zwischen Mary und Frank. Es ist Not. Vielleicht können beide einander helfen? Der Aufbau von Bringing Out The Dead dürfte den Ebenen des Infernos entsprechen. Alle Leiden enden an derselben Stelle: In der Notaufnahme. Das ist der Ort der Barmherzigkeit. Franks Job aber endet niemals. Das ist Frank tägliche Tragödie. - On a list of the least known Martin Scorsese films, Bringing Out The Dead should be quite high up on the list. He explains that during his work he was less concerned with saving lives and more about bearing witness. He looks down into the abyss of human misery. There, in the abyss, he should not only help but also encourage. Frank asks the family of the old man, who probably just died of a heart attack, if they have some music. Then he puts on Frank Sinatra and... Nicolas Cage plays Frank with his eyes squeezed shut in pain. Frank has hallucinations about a young homeless girl he couldn't save. He's seeking redemption for her death. So he drifts through the empty streets at night as he once did Travis-Bickle. Steam rises from the sewers. It must be hot down there. Fortunately, Paul Schrader's script doesn't follow any obvious plot. Because the days of the paramedic have neither a beginning nor a goal. Frank lives in a kind of limbo. Once Frank has a vision of him pulling corpses out of the pavement of the street. He tries to free the dead. Like all Scorsese movies, "Bringing Out the Dead" touches me deeply! Nothing here seems rehearsed or copied from other films! Only Frank's co-paramedic Larry (John Goodman) is a revelation! Larry deals with his grief in such a way that he is always looking for his next meal. Paramedic is a job and you can't let it get you down, Larry knows. Once Frank works with Marcus (Ving Rhames), an evangelist. Marcus wants to demonstrate the power of Jesus Christ to him and raises a dead man to life. What a supposed miracle! On the third day after Jesus rose from the dead, paramedic Walls (Tom Sizemore) gets out of control. Two women are always in front of Frank's eyes. One is called Rose. Her face looks at him on every street corner. The other is Mary (Patricia Arquette). Mary used to be a drug addict, now she's clean. Frank loves Mary, but Bringing Out The Dead is definitely not the kind of movie where the girl falls into the hero's arms at the end. It's also not a real love story between Mary and Frank. It's adversity. Maybe they can help each other? The structure of Bringing Out The Dead should correspond to the levels of the inferno. All suffering ends in the same place: The emergency room. That's the place of mercy. But Frank's job never ends. This is Frank's daily tragedy.
