- How to depict glaring poverty in the cinema in a respectful and realistic way - not condescendingly? Nadine Labaki from Lebanon manages to do this by narrating very soberly. Capernaum is about the heartache of the underprivileged. Pain so strong that WE can literally feel it on our own bodies. Labaki does not do this for no reason. She doesn't want to exploit the feelings of those who can't defend themselves for her film. Labaki's matter-of-fact style makes it not seem like pity. Capernaum is about fighting. About fighting anyway, even though the next morning won't bring any improvement. The fighter in Capernaum is called Zain (Zain Al Rafeea). Zain is still a child. He lives in the slums and we notice that he is an astute observer and a convincing problem solver. Instinctively Zain understands when his sister (who is only attending preschool!!!) is to be sold to a freezer. In exchange for a few chickens. Then Zain runs away from home and will eventually face his desperate parents in court. Capernaum follows the principle of showing things Not to explain. Unfortunately, the scenes in court are a bit different. But that doesn't really matter in this so powerful movie! Labaki is a neo-realist, even if she doesn't yet reach the big classics. But she recreates life in the gutter with all the details, makes it come alive in front of our eyes. In the middle of it all is Zain with his big heart! That's why this extraordinary, inventive and loyal child can be exactly that again in the end: CHILD. Certainly for the very first time in Zain's whole life.

Endlessly quotable and full
Endlessly quotable and full of thought-provoking ideas. It's films like these that really get to the heart of issues and ask questions in a way that's real. I wish there were more like Godard, especially today.

If there is one thing Godard
If there is one thing Godard has in spades, it's style. This film floats with ease across its scenes, the camera surprisingly versatile, resulting in some truly impressive shots. The story isn't exactly incredibly strong or potent, but it’s hardly the point when the director is having so much fun experimenting cinematically.
