Mike fragt "for what?" “You’re a loss to no one"; findet Howard. - Clint Eastwood is 91 years old today and I personally expect him to live at least another ten years. Since Eastwood completes one film a year, his late work should be far from complete. Cry Macho will stand out in this late work as a very unusual Eastwood film! You expect something like a remorseful action-heavy thriller and then you get something quite different. We get glorious sunrises in the west, desert plains and scenes that drag the action on and on. The story begins in 1979. Mike Milo alias Eastwood shows up at the ranch of Howard Polk (Dwight Yoakam) after the lunch break. Howard tells Mike he's going to be late. Mike asks "for what?" Then Howard starts talking down to Mike. We get that Mike is a former rodeo star who had an accident. We learn how the accident ended his career, hear about pills and alcohol. "You're a loss to no one"; Howard thinks. Then he fires Mike and rehires him a year later. Howard asks Mike to go to Mexico to kidnap his son, who lives there in his mother's household. Mike accepts the job because he still owes Howard. In Mexico, Mike meets Howard's ex-wife Leta (Fernanda Urrejola), in her villa, guarded by bodyguards. Leta tells Mike that he could take their son Rafa (Eduardo Minett) - just 14 years old - with him, if he can find him. Leta even tries to lure Mike into her bed (this seems a bit vain, since Eastwood is indeed no longer the youngest). And Rafa? He takes part in cockfights and is actually found by Mike. Those who read the poor imdb rating will wonder why Cry Macho gets 8.0 points here. But you have to be a little forgiving, because Eastwood takes his time. From the middle of the film onwards I was in the film. Mike and Rafa find themselves in a small Mexican town near the border. Slowly they get closer to each other. They both find accommodation in a ranch and Mike teaches Rafa how to ride, because how else could he even live in Texas? Mike knows so much about horses that both are quickly accepted into the small community, even become part of the family. In a way, Mike is putting his shattered life back together again, which is celebrated in beautifully quiet scenes. Eastwood the Preacher. Mike finds joy in serving the community, he realises what is important in life. Cry Macho shows all this so sincerely and unagitatedly, as you can only do when you are 91 years old as a director.
