Trailer
Am Thanksgiving hält Tochter Wendy eine Rede: "Thanks for letting us white people kill all the Indians". - A winter storm is moving across Connecticut. Thanksgiving looks like the end of the world. There, in the suburbs at the edge of the forest, people live in their two-story houses, deeply depressed. Depressed by their pleasures and sins. And their children do the same, have discovered sex and alcohol and a little weed for themselves. Hood, the family name, is held together by quiet desperation. The father Ben (Kevin Kline) has a secret affair with the neighbour (Sigourney Weaver). The mother Elena (Joan Allen) is a shoplifter. On Thanksgiving daughter Wendy gives a speech: "Thanks for letting us white people kill all the Indians". Often the films of the Taiwanese Ang Lee are about following protocol. Once Wendy (Christina Ricci) experiments with the neighbor's boy (Elijah Wood). Ben catches her, asks what she is doing? Wendy could have asked him exactly the same thing. We have to understand the family against the background of the 68 movement. The sexual revolution is still in full swing and you enjoy your martini with some marijuana. Who would masturbate in the shower and waste hot water? If you watch The Ice Storm twice, you will see more and more parallels between parents and children. The parents play swap wives, the children make themselves compliant with a few tablets. Tolerance is everything, although Elena realizes that she would rather not try to understand the effects of this. Little note: This is one of the most depressing movies I have ever seen.
