Eddington liefert ein paar Provokationen in den Raum, die das Publikum spalten. Ein Film, der spaltet und von gespaltenen Gemeinschaften handelt. Dabei bedient er sich dem Genre des zeitgenössischen Westerns. Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) ist der lebensmüde Sherif von Eddington. Das ist eine Gemeinde in New Mexico mit nicht einmal 3000 Einwohnern. Ein Fremder kommt nach Eddington, wiegelt den Saloon auf. Der Saloon gehört Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal), ein Mann mit wilder Vergangenheit - unter anderem mit Joes Frau Frau Louise (Emma Stone) und seiner Schwiegermutter Dawn (Deirdre O'Connell). Beide Männer stehen sich gegenüber; Joe und Ted - und nicht nur privat, denn im Sommer 2020 ging es auch darum, ob man sich mit Masken vor Covid schützt... Joe jedenfalls versucht seinem Leben als Masken-Gegner Aufwind zu verleihen. Die Pandemie ist aber nur der Anfang; nun geht es um Verschwörungs-Theorien bis hin zu den Rassismus Protesten nach George Floyds Tod. Wird Eddington all dem gerecht? Oder werden diese Themen nur ausgebeutet der blossen Provokation willen? - How could the chaotic events of summer 2020 in America have come about, asks Eddington, without reaching a conclusion. We will never know. Eddington throws out a few provocative ideas that divide the audience. A film that divides and deals with divided communities. In doing so, it draws on the genre of the contemporary Western. Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) is the world-weary sheriff of Eddington. This is a community in New Mexico with less than 3,000 inhabitants. A stranger comes to Eddington and stirs up trouble in the saloon. The saloon belongs to Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal), a man with a wild past – including with Joe's wife Louise (Emma Stone) and his mother-in-law Dawn (Deirdre O'Connell). The two men face off against each other; Joe and Ted – and not just privately, because in the summer of 2020, it was also about whether to protect oneself from Covid with masks... Joe, at any rate, is trying to give his life as a mask opponent a boost. But the pandemic is only the beginning; now it's all about conspiracy theories and the racism protests following George Floyd's death. Will Eddington do justice to all this? Or are these issues just being exploited for the sake of provocation?
