The Wedding Singer, jawohl erzählt die Geschichte eines Wedding Singers aus New Jersey. Der heisst Robbie Hart und kann gleichzeitig süss und dann wieder - Split! - ein echtes Monster sein. Niemand Geringeres als Adam Sandler kann ein solches verkörpern, allerdings fragt man sich, ob den Filmemachern seine gespaltene Persönlichkeit überhaupt bewusst ist? Irgendwann einmal hatten wir in der Videothek eine Adam Sandler Diskussion und kamen darauf, dass keiner besser ausrasten kann. Wie ein Psychopath. Uns in der Videothek also war die gespaltene Persönlichkeit der Adam Sandler Charaktere wie Robbie Hart bewusst, aber den Machern von The Wedding Singer? Die Handlung dahinter ist jedem bekannt. Nach einer Kette von Missverständnissen finden sich Mädchen und Junge am Ende. Rolltitel. Happy Ending. Dankeschön an alle romantischen Komödien der letzten 100 Jahre. Das Genre verlangt dabei 1) Mädchen und Junge müssen voneinander getrennt werden, weil einer von beiden mit einem Widerling verlobt ist. 2) Gerne und oft sagen sie das Falsche zur falschen Zeit. 3) Die Informationen sind fehlerhaft. Wie lange wird es nun dauern, das Offensichtliche zu vermeiden? Es liegt nun also an uns, die echte Geschichte hinter dieser Formel-Handlung zu erkennen und zwar die, dass Robbie Hart eine gespaltene Persönlichkeit hat. Die Vorbilder aus den klassischen Hollywood Komödien waren natürlich viel charmanter und sie konnten auch noch tanzen. Vermutlich war ihnen auch bewusst, wie schwachsinnig die Rahmenhandlung um sie herum war. The Wedding Singer zollt dem Zeitalter allgemeiner Verdummung Tribut, denn phasenweise müssen wir annehmen, die Formel-Handlung sei ernst gemeint. Womöglich sogar tiefsinnig? Jedenfalls wissen wir, die wir empfindsam und emotional intelligent sind, sofort, dass der Hochzeits-Sänger und die niedliche Kellnerin Julia (Drew Barrymore) füreinander bestimmt sind, während die Beiden viel länger brauchen, um genau das heraus zu finden. Stattdessen liebt er seine gemeine Ex und sie ist verlobt mit einem Widerling. Und nun der Knackpunkt: Eigentlich ist Adam Sandler als romantischer Liebhaber fehlbesetzt. Er taugt viel mehr zum Ekelpaket. Aber so? Immer hat man den Eindruck, er würde sich über den romantischen Robbie Hart lustig machen, immer bricht der Finsterling aus ihm hervor. Das ist spannend! Sein Pendant wird von Steve Buscemi verkörpert, der auch Hochzeits-Sänger und Fiesling ist. Und sein Verbündeter ist Billy Idol, das alte Ekel. The genre thereby requires 1) Girl and boy must be separated because one of them is engaged to a creep. 2) They willingly and often say the wrong thing at the wrong time. 3) The information is incorrect. How long will it now take to avoid the obvious? So now it's up to us to see the real story behind this formula plot, and that is that Robbie Hart has a split personality. The role models from the classic Hollywood comedies were, of course, much more charming and they could also dance. Presumably, they were also aware of how moronic the frame story around them was. The Wedding Singer pays tribute to the age of general stupidity, because at times we have to assume that the formulaic plot is meant to be serious. Possibly even profound? In any case, those of us who are sensitive and emotionally intelligent know right away that Wedding Singer and cute waitress Julia (Drew Barrymore) are meant for each other, while it takes them much longer to figure out just that. Instead, he loves his mean ex and she's engaged to a creep. And now the kicker: Adam Sandler is actually miscast as a romantic lover. He's much more suited to being a creep. But like this? You always get the impression that he's making fun of the romantic Robbie Hart, the creep always bursts out of him. That's exciting!
