FREE ON YOUTUBE (DU FINDEST DEN GANZEN FILM FREI AUF YOUTUBE) Ich hatte Meatballs als etwas alberne Ferien Camp Komödie in Erinnerung. Handlung? Nein. Nummern-Revue! - FREE ON YOUTUBE I remembered Meatballs as a somewhat silly holiday camp comedy. But that's not true! Meatballs is an anarchistic, irreverent, beautifully undisciplined Plot? No. Numbers revue! Actually, we should change the title to National Lampoon's Meatballs, because that's the school of comedy behind it: Ivan Reitman, Harold Ramis & Bill Murray. Meatballs is their debut, financed with Canadian money, by the way. Murray and Ramis started as Second City actors. It was an improvisational theater group from Chicago. Especially Harold Ramis probably looked too silly for Hollywood mainstream comedies and earned his money first as a screenwriter. He also doesn't act in front of the camera in Meatballs. The great strength of Bill Murray (as well as of later actor Ramis): restraint. Normally slapstick comedies like Meatballs demand undisciplined foolishness. But Murray is much better than a reserved, disciplined anarchist. Fortunately, this debut of Reitman, Ramis & Murray also refrains from a spectacular development during the last third. All hell doesn't have to break loose in the holiday camp! Everything goes its unregulated course until the end. For the first time the geeks were the heroes in a movie! At that time Reitman was filming with Bill Murray and other then little-known actors in the Canadian forest without a significant budget. No one could have guessed that this was the breakthrough in teen comedy! Ivan Reitman and his co-author Harold Ramis belonged to the exclusive Hollywood Club overnight! Since then it is even desirable to mend your glasses with tape! Meatballs is about a weekend outing and about the nerds defeating the athletes for the first time. A summer camp film without sex, but with intelligent dialogues? It is possible! And isn't it true that a whole generation dreamed of going to North Star Camp with Bill Murray? The message of the film goes like this: Try to do your best, but don't be afraid of making mistakes. Murray could convey this message like no one else. It's garnished with politically incorrect humor in a summer camp that in reality would probably have been closed after three days. Of course there are sexist scenes with Murray and Kate Lynch alias Roxanne - but those were different times. On the level that Meatballs intends, it all works out wonderfully! And who can know all the secrets of a good comedy? Reitman, Ramis & Murray at least know quite a lot of these secrets on their cinematic way to "Ghostbusters". -
