FREE ON YOUTUBE Every now and then, our fidgety regular customer Lidija from Serbia comes into the shop to ask for dramatic films, and ones that really get to you. Unusual! Normal customers always have the same wish; "Something light today". But Lidija offers even more: she can get DVDs from Serbia! From the golden age of Balkan comedies, from the early 80s. For example Balkan Spy - a jewel! Balkan Spy tells the story of an elderly gentleman who is summoned in Belgrade to reveal some information about his neighbour, his tenants. The man has lived in France for twenty years and has now returned to Yugoslavia. Very suspicious! The landlord is a figure as comic as he is tragic (Danilo Stojković). He suspects that his new meter is a spy and begins to follow him. During his observations, the circumstantial evidence (he believes) accumulates: the man is tel of a conspiracy to overthrow the government. So he goes one step further, recruiting his wife as well as his twin brother to become full-time spies.... The great Balkan comedies of the time offer so much more than loud laughs! On a deeper level, we witness the fall of a Stalinist in his attempt to save the nation. His wife, who at first thinks the man has gone mad, now finally sees some sense in his life again - and is astonishingly open about social misery and corruption in Yugoslavia. The rift between traditional socialism and free market economy is openly revealed here. A topic that is still topical in today's Serbia. And again and again the question arises: Is this really Europe or are we in a parallel universe behind the moon?
