Out the Magic in Your Mind". "Bring Out the Magic in Your Mind" - dass sie endlich Selbstbewusstsein erlangen sollte! O'Connor gerät in Vertrags-Streitigkeiten ihrer Plattenfirma. - FREE ON YOUTUBE This is a film that makes you melt away! A film after a true event. It all starts with the phone ringing in a London indie studio. The receptionist who picks up the phone does it for the first time, because it's her first day at work. On the phone, a casting agency. They demand Hazel O'Connor. The receptionist is visibly surprised! She IS Hazel O'Connor! That's exactly what she tells the callers, but they say: "Oh no, this one's a singer." At the same time O'Connor was reading a book called "Bring Out the Magic in Your Mind". It's about thinking positively. To live one's dreams simply by focusing very strongly on them. O'Connor wanted to make it as a singer and songwriter, but she had only composed four songs. It was her brother who showed her how to write songs and with him she hung around in London most of the time. It was the late 70s and O'Connor's brother played as a pre-program for the Buzzcocks. London had so much to offer; The Specials, The Clash and the Rich Kids with singer Midge Ure! O'Connor wanted to be part of it and wrote more songs. Albion Records believed in her, but offered her only a pound as a reward. A pound! To pay the rent, she worked as a receptionist. Albion Records were new to the business and had produced a single artist until then: Ian Gomm, who in turn had a recording studio where the Stranglers were also customers. Do you realize how much fun Breaking Glass is? We're in the middle of it! Gomm had also signed a record deal for North America with DEM Nick Lowe (!). Albion, however, had released a song by O'Connor, but she was ashamed of it. She thought it wasn't her best and was afraid that they would associate her with this song from then on. A phase in which everything went wrong. In her biography O'Connor will tell how she ran away from home, from Coventry, Warwickshire. Everyone thought she was crazy. She wanted to study. But then she experiences something traumatic, is raped in Morocco. It should give her life a new turn. Instead of studying, she hitchhiked to different countries, kept herself alive with small jobs. She spent time in France and Ibiza, even returning to her parents in remorse. She settled down with a small sewing shop until she was broken into. She fled again, this time to London. Not directly, she played in front of GIs in Germany and experienced a bomb attack in Lebanon. Only then she settled down in London and fell in love. In 1975 she took part for the first time in a movie, the sex comedy "Girls Come First". They were looking for models like O'Connor; those who were not afraid of nude scenes. But as an actress O'Connor was never sure of her and this is where the book comes in. "Bring Out the Magic in Your Mind" - that she should finally gain self-confidence! But wasn't it the case that people wanted to see someone like YOU? Not a man! A woman! One who had run away from home, raped and witnessed a terrible bombing raid in Lebanon. How did they think and talk people back then? Just like them! And already we are in Breaking Glass, which should become YOUR film. O'Connor, the unspoilt poetess of punk, who slowly became a star before she reached the top, but crashed again. A female "Bowie"! A creature from "Metropolis"! Within a single week she wrote all the songs for the film and produced them with Tony Visconti - Bowie's producer! O'Connor lived her most beautiful dreams long ago. But don't worry, Breaking Glass is not a fairy tale. In England Thatcher seizes power and plays with the idea of reintroducing the death penalty. O'Connor gets into contract disputes with their record company. And yet! O'Connor sang in front of the Stranglers and accompanied Ian Dury! She was practically destitute and had to sleep out on the street. She earned nothing with her record deal, although Breaking Glass has platinum status today! If we enjoy the movie now, we have to remember: This is a bittersweet story. (Picture: https://www.google.de/search?q=breaking+glass+1980+film&source=lnms&tbm…)
