Zu viel Nachtleben. The Flamingo Kid verdichtet eine ähnliche Geschichte. -
(YOU FIND THE WHOLE FILM FREE ON YOUTUBE) When I was about eighteen, my father accused me that none of my friends was political. What I wanted out of life was wrong. Too much nightlife. The Flamingo Kid condenses a similar story. It begins in a poor area of Brooklyn. The son of a simple family from the neighborhood works on Long Island at a beach club. Against the advice of his father, a plumber who would rather see his son working hard. The boy begins to idealize a flashy car dealership. But already on Labor Day he knows things about his "idol" that he would probably not have liked to have known - at the same time he sees his father in a new light. Matt Dillon plays the teenager, the Flamingo Kid, Hector Elizondo the father and Richard Crenna the car dealer. There is also a bikini goddess, but essentially only the three listed characters are at the heart of the story. Father's a hard worker. He still knows what it's like to dream. But he also knows how little life has in store for dreamers. In the most poetic moments of the film, the father dreams of ships, following a lifelong obsession. The car dealership, on the other hand, thinks you're just what you're wearing. Matt Dillon is the revelation of The Flamingo Kid! What a sensitive actor who looks like a poster boy! Dillon makes a love affair with the camera like only a few movie stars. In every scene he looks natural. Without him, The Flamingo Kid would be in danger of losing himself. A work about the meaning of life and more... Thanks to Dillon's presence, however, every scene is simply about what Dillon performs. He tries not to give unnecessary weight to his role as a normal teenager and The Flamingo Kid lives on it. A film we can immerse ourselves in. To the rhythm of this beach club. Dillon's teenie runs from guest to guest with drinks or towels, but basically knows that he is not one of them. He's not part of a better society. This changes when the car dealer pays attention to him. When the car dealer's daughter even invites him to dinner, the teenager thinks he can finally put Brooklyn's boring life behind him (note: Brooklyn wasn't yet a hip district back then, in 1984). But: This summer is a summer of experiences and in the end the teenie learns how wise and loving his own father is. Until then, The Flamingo Kid is also a lot of fun (without deserving the Stigma Teenie comedy) and offers deep and real emotions. Much more than we are used to from a Hollywood teenie movie off the rack! (transl. deepl.com)
