"I'm the one who turned your trumpet into a horn of plenty."; sagt sie. - Mahogany is a big and lush soap opera - an outrageously commercial film and Diana Ross fires our imagination, but it leads... where? That, however, is never quite clear. There are noble costumes, romantic music and a few socially redeeming words. Behind it the fable; from rags to riches. And why should this now make sense? Diana Ross embodies Tracy from Chicago, who hustles as a secretary by day and dreams of becoming a fashion designer by night. She falls in love with Brian ((Billy Dee Williams), a politician who looks something like Jesse Jackson. But of course, their love has to go through ups and downs, like when she pours milk into his megaphone.... "I'm the one who turned your trumpet into a horn of plenty"; she says. No one I know would say such a thing, but it doesn't matter. Then she'll design clothes (and rethink her ambitions) and he'll run for city council. Things get problematic when photographer Sean (Anthony Perkins) appears on the scene and takes Tracy or Mahony to Rome. By the way, Anthony Perkins plays the same role as in Psycho, only this time he is a psychopathic photographer. So Mahony takes every cliché on the market with her, while Tracy pays a lot of money for plane tickets, because of course she has to return home to Chicago at some point. Because there, with her family and her lover, there is her place. That's where she gets to help build a community and do some good. Certainly her place is not with a pack of perverts in Rome! Mahony functions on the either/or principle and never asks herself if Tracy couldn't work as a fashion designer in Chicago? For her, submitting to her husband's political career is a good choice, standing by him. A bad chapter for black feminists. But: A commercial film with black leading actors after all.
