- Robert Downey Sr. belongs to the first squad of really successful indie filmmakers in America and yet he has a lot in common with the classics, because just like Walsh or Huston, he had been working in film production for a long time before he directed for the first time. He had explored the boundaries of cinema and wanted to push them! He always stayed true to himself and made the films he wanted to make (no matter what the audience thought of them). In the early 60s, the New Yorker (child of Jewish-Hungarian migrants) began to make films independently. He developed a new technique of combining self-taken photos with live action footage. To do this, he invented bizarre stories, such as that of a poor fool who married his own mother. He dies, goes to heaven and becomes a rock'n roller (you read that right). The film is called "Chaffed Elbows". This was followed by his breakthrough, the 1969 satire Putney Swope, which takes a swipe at black revolutionary politics as much as what we call capitalism. Here, a token black advertising executive Swope (Arnold Johnson) rises to the head of an advertising corporation (while the other executives plot idiotically against him). So Swope fills all the positions with black radicals (and nutcases and arsonists) who want to attack and overthrow society, racism, the whole system. All this plus corruption and greed and.... Robert Downey Sr. takes a wry look at people and their desires. No one is safe! Nothing can be taken for granted! In the end, we are all always guilty. And who researches more about United Artists decorating Putney Swope with an X-rating.
