Tony Scott kombiniert die glatte Filmkunst von heute mit den sexuellen Stereotypen von gestern - aber so gut aufbereitet, dass du deine Abneigung dagegen vollkommen vergisst. Es ist die Verfilmung eines Pulp Romans aus den 40ern. In solchen Romanen galten starke Frauen im Spiel der Männer. In diesem Spiel herrscht Anthony Quinn über sein eigenes Imperium in Mexiko. Er ist umgeben von Handlangern und Killern. Nun nimmt er den Marine Soldaten Cochran (Kevin Costner) auf, der ihm mal das Leben gerettet hat. Jetzt kommen noch ein paar Sex-Szenen dazu, die du im Auto besser nur bei Schritt-Geschwindigkeit versuchst. Kurzum, wir befinden uns in einer Männer Welt der 40er. Zwei Männer streiten um eine Frau, die aber an sich ganz egal ist, denn es geht ja um die beiden Männer. Das wird schön gewalttätig vorgeführt und sehr gut gespielt (die Chemie zwischen Stowe und Costner sowie Quinn als Brutalo). Rechtschaffene Charaktere gibts dabei gar nicht, alle sind gewissenlos und gerissen und das zieht dich schön runter. - Who will win this showdown? Style or story? Tony Scott combines the slick cinematic style of today with the sexual stereotypes of yesterday – but presents it so skilfully that you completely forget your aversion to it. It is the film adaptation of a pulp novel from the 1940s. In such novels, strong women were pawns in a game played by men. In this game, Anthony Quinn rules over his own empire in Mexico. He’s surrounded by henchmen and hitmen. Now he takes in the Marine soldier Cochran (Kevin Costner), who once saved his life. On top of that, there are a few sex scenes – which you’d be wise to watch in the car only at walking speed. In short, we find ourselves in a man’s world of the 1940s. Two men are fighting over a woman, who is actually quite irrelevant, because it’s all about the two men. It’s portrayed in a wonderfully violent way and the acting is superb (the chemistry between Stowe and Costner, as well as Quinn as the thug). There aren’t any decent characters to be found; they’re all unscrupulous and cunning, and that really drags you down.
