Heute ist New York clean. Of New York überhaupt leiden mag? - Today New York is clean. The hipster hotbed. Sometimes they come over to our place, set up cafes and bars in a minimalist way and sell tiny portions of food (with really great ingredients) or coffee for 4.00 Euros. I'm not sure if I would have preferred to have been massacred on the streets of Brooklyn earlier or if I would have had to buy coffee for 4.00 dollars today. It doesn't matter. Martin Scorsese's New York around 1840 can be considered a hotbed of hell. His history lessons are drenched in blood and are incredibly violent. You only get room to live if you kill someone else = an archaic form of gentrification. Blacks and Irish are hunted by the mob, the poorest are rioting outside in the streets. Here Vallon (Liam Neeson) prepares for battle, even for war. With sword and cleaver. In the end the street is littered with corpses, among them Vallon's. He was slain by his enemy Bill the Butcher (Daniel Day-Lewis). Vallon leaves behind a son named Amsterdam. After 20 years Amsterdam (Leonardo DiCaprio) returns. The streets are still ruled by Bill the Butcher. Gangs Of New York will be the story of revenge... This scenario is full of grotesque characters, especially Bill, who likes to underline his brutal ruthlessness with cheap philosophy. There is the pickpocket Jenny Everdeane (Cameron Diaz) and Monk (Brendan Gleeson) and finally the shopkeeper Happy Jack (John C. Reilly). Some are fictional, some are probably real. You can read more about them on Wikipedia. Amsterdam itself is not as abysmally evil as the characters around it. He is not a wild man. Bill will teach him how to kill a man from a pig carcass. Sometimes he'll stick a knife in his glass eye. Bill is not unfunny, for he is able to judge his cruelty even from a kind of analytical distance. Not to forget; Bill and all of them already exist in a democracy, as Scorsese's film cynically notes. Gangs Of New York is an opulent journey into darkness. Not my favorite Scorsese movie, because I'm not so sure if he even likes the creeps from Gangs Of New York? Unlike in his big mafia epics I guess not.

I thought the performances by
I thought the performances by Leonardo and Daniel Day-Lewis were the highlight of the film. However I wish I saw them on a different occasion. I found the film lacking something, whether it be story or otherwise. The corny music didn't help.
