Gladiator II (2024) (Rating 7,5) DVD-

Ridley Scotts Gladiator II bietet gleichzeitig zu viel und zu wenig: Das Spektakel reicht gerade so, um nicht langweilig zu werden, dafür gibt es eine solche Vielzahl von Themen und Konzepten, dass es uns schwindelig wird. Sechzehn Jahre sind vergangen, seit Maximus starb. Heute stehen zwei neue Figuren im Mittelpunkt: General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) und der Flüchtling Lucius Verus alias Hanno (Paul Mescal). Bei einem Angriff von Acacius Soldaten stirbt Lucius Frau. Acacius ist also der Feind, den es zu besiegen gilt. Oder ist das etwa doch nicht so einfach? Schliesslich ist Acacius mit Maximus Frau Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) verheiratet. Jahre zuvor brachte Lucilla ihren Sohn in Sicherheit... Lucius jedenfalls wird von Macrinus (der tolle Denzel Washington) als Gladiator ausgebildet, um die unterdrückten Menschen im Stadium von einer Revolte abzuhalten. Brot und Spiele. Das könnte sich zu einem schönen Showdown entwickeln, doch jedes Mal, wenn der Film Interesse an einem Handlungs-Strang zeigt, dreht er kurz darauf trotzdem in eine andere Richtung ab. Irgendwann einmal las ich, dass Nick Cave ein Drehbuch für den zweiten Gladiator verfasst hätte, in dem der Original Maximus gezwungen ist, über Hunderte von Jahren zu leben, um immer und immer wieder in die Arena zurück zu kehren. Wer weiss, vielleicht hätte ein bisschen Wahnsinn Ridley Scotts zweitem Gladiator gut getan? - Ridley Scott's Gladiator II offers too much and too little at the same time: the spectacle is just enough to keep us from getting bored, but there is such a variety of themes and concepts that it makes us dizzy. Sixteen years have passed since Maximus died. Today, two new characters take center stage: General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) and the fugitive Lucius Verus alias Hanno (Paul Mescal). Lucius' wife dies during an attack by Acacius' soldiers. So Acacius is the enemy that needs to be defeated. Or is it not that simple after all? After all, Acacius is married to Maximus' wife Lucilla (Connie Nielsen). Years earlier, Lucilla brought her son to safety... Anyway, Lucius is trained as a gladiator by Macrinus (the great Denzel Washington) to prevent the oppressed people in the stadium from revolting. Bread and circuses. This could develop into a nice showdown, but every time the movie shows interest in one plot line, it still veers off in a different direction shortly afterwards. At one point I read that Nick Cave had written a script for the second Gladiator, in which the original Maximus is forced to live for hundreds of years in order to return to the arena again and again. Who knows, maybe a little madness would have done Ridley Scott's second Gladiator some good?
