Die Menschen demütigen sich gegenseitig und schlachten einander ab. Immer wieder fährt die Kamera ganz dicht an ihre porigen verschwitzten Gesichter heran, fast meint man, den Gestank zu riechen. Ein Erzähler führt uns ein, dass so das Leben auf einem entfernten Planeten aussehe; es ist der Beginn eines dreistündigen Albtraums. Wissenschaft existiert in dieser Gesellschaft nicht mehr, die Universität wurde niedergebrannt. Von der Erde werden nun 25 Forscher gesandt, um zu beobachten. Eingreifen dürfen sie nicht. Der Kopf des Unternehmens Don Rumata (Leonid Yarmolnik) wird wie ein Gott verehrt und gilt als unverwundbar.
