Wem gehört die Nacht? Der Drogen Polizei oder den Drogen Händlern? Ich würde meinen, in James Grays Thriller steht es unentschieden. Joaquin Phoenix spielt Bobby Green, den Manager eines Nacht-Clubs in Brooklyn. Jede Nacht reibt er sich durch die Menschen Massen. Er behält alles im Auge, begrüsst jeden. Und die schöne Amanda Juarez (Eva Mendes) liebt ihn aufrichtig. Der Club gehört Marat Bujayev (Moni Moshonov), von dem es heisst, er würde den Drogen Handel in Brooklyn kontrollieren (der aber sehr empathisch lächelt). Jedenfalls ist sein Neffe Vadim (Alex Veadov) der Dealer des Clubs, was Bobby vornehm übersieht. Das ist auch nicht seine Aufgabe. Die besteht darin, den Club zu leiten. Bobbys Vater Burt Grusinsky (Robert Duvall) ist der örtliche Polizei Chef und sein Bruder Joseph Grusinsky (Mark Wahlberg) einer der besten Cops. Niemand weiss um diese Verwandtschaft. Die Dinge aber spitzen sich zu als Vadim Bobby bittet, mit beim Drogen Handel einzusteigen. Bei einer Razzia im Club kommt es zu Vergeltungs-Massnahmen und Bobby Vater bittet seinen Sohn, undercover für die New Yorker Polizei zu arbeiten... Zwei Brüder auf zwei gegnerischen Seiten. Neu ist das nicht, aber James Gray kennt die Welt von Bobby ganz genau und führte uns die Welt russischer Migranten bereits in Little Odessa (DVD3094) und The Yards (DVD7811) vor. Das waren Thriller, die aber auch auf A-Festivals erfolgreich liefen. Besonders hervorzuheben ist die Tatsache, dass Amada Bobby wirklich liebt, ihm Ratschläge erteilt und nicht nur aufs Geld aus ist (wie die Frauen Figuren in einem schlechteren Thriller). Bobby selbst ist ein Rätsel, hat aus düsteren Motiven seine Verwandtschaft verheimlicht. Nun, da auf seinen Vater geschossen wird, gerät er in einen Loyalitäts-Konflikt. Doch gibt es niemanden in Brooklyn, der Bobbys Verwandtschaft kennt? We Own The Night ist ein dringlicher, atmosphärischer Thriller, der auch aus den 70ern kommen könnte - dem goldenen Zeitalter solcher Thriller. - Who owns the night? The drug police or the drug dealers? I'd say it's a tie in James Gray's thriller. Joaquin Phoenix plays Bobby Green, the manager of a Brooklyn nightclub. Every night he rubs shoulders with the crowds. He keeps an eye on everything, greets everyone. And the beautiful Amanda Juarez (Eva Mendes) genuinely loves him. The club belongs to Marat Bujayev (Moni Moshonov), who is said to control the drug trade in Brooklyn (but who smiles very empathetically). Anyway, his nephew Vadim (Alex Veadov) is the club's dealer, which Bobby nobly overlooks. That's not his job either. It's to run the club. Bobby's father Burt Grusinsky (Robert Duvall) is the local police chief and his brother Joseph Grusinsky (Mark Wahlberg) is one of the best cops. No one knows about this relationship. But things come to a head when Vadim asks Bobby to get involved in the drug trade. A raid on the club leads to retaliatory measures and Bobby's father asks his son to work undercover for the New York police... Two brothers on two opposing sides. This is not new, but James Gray knows Bobby's world very well and already introduced us to the world of Russian migrants in Little Odessa (DVD3094) and The Yards (DVD7811). These were thrillers, but they also ran successfully at A-list festivals. Of particular note is the fact that Amada genuinely loves Bobby, gives him advice and is not just out for the money (like the women characters in a worse thriller). Bobby himself is an enigma, has concealed his kinship for sinister motives. Now that his father is shot, he is caught in a conflict of loyalties. But is there no one in Brooklyn who knows Bobby's kinship? We Own The Night is an urgent, atmospheric thriller that could have come out of the 70s - the golden age of such thrillers.
