Diese Filme sehen aus wie Hollywood, doch ihrer subversiver Charme ist so berauschend als ob sie aus einem Paralleluniversum kommen! Pre-Code Hollywood: sexuelle Liaisons, Scheidungen, Korruption in der Politik, Vermischung von Schwarz und Weiss ohne rassistische Grenzen! Während es in den Depressionsfilmen ums nackte Überleben ging, zeigt der Weg von Barbara Stanwyck in Babyface steil nach oben. Night nurse zeigt einen schockierenden Clark Bable, der seine Kinder verhungern lässt, um an das Erbe zu kommen. Heroes for sale erzählt fast physisch spürbar den Leidensweg eines Kriegsheimkehrers, während die Jungs aus Wild boys of the road von Polizisten aus dem Zug geworfen werden und ihnen gesteckt wird, dass sie den Uniformierten doch zahlenmässig überlegen seien... Safe in hell wird seinem Titel voll und ganz gerecht. Nachdem eine Prostituierte ihren Zuhälter erschlagen hat, findet sie ihre scheinbare Rettung in einem Hotelzimmer, irgendwo in der Karibik, doch das Zimmer wird zur Hölle voller Handgreiflichkeiten und geiler Blicke. Fallen women gibt es eine Reihe in dieser Zeit, karg und erzählerisch straff wird der Zusammenhang von Geld, Karriere und Sex formuliert. Die düsteren Filme von William A. Wellman und Rowland Brown sind nicht mehr bekannt und doch prägend. Brownes Karriere dauerte konsequenterweise nur von 1931-33. Hell´s highway und Quick millions sind hart und unmissverständlich, weiter ging nur noch die bizarre Polit Phantasie Gabriel over the White House. Ein Präsident im Koma ist von der Idee besessen, die Probleme der Nation zu lösen und wird darüber zum Diktator. Heroes for sale tells almost physically the suffering of a war returnee, while the boys from Wild boys of the road are thrown off the train by policemen and told that they are outnumbered by the uniforms... Safe in hell does full justice to its title. After a prostitute has killed her pimp, she finds her apparent rescue in a hotel room, somewhere in the Caribbean, but the room becomes hell full of fisticuffs and horny looks. There is a series of Fallen women at this time, the connection between money, career and sex is formulated in a sparse and narrative way. The gloomy films by William A. Wellman and Rowland Brown are no longer well known and yet formative. Brownes career lasted consequently only from 1931-33. Hell´s highway and Quick millions are hard and unmistakable, further only the bizarre political fantasy Gabriel over the White House went. A president in a coma is obsessed with the idea of solving the nation's problems and becomes a dictator. In contrast, the New Deal was merely old fashioned.
