Das Licht im Kino geht aus und sie tummeln sich auf der Leinwand, die Phantome unseres Ichs: Monster, Doppelgänger, Geister und Vampire, Halbwesen und künstliche Menschen... Boris Karloff alias das Geschöpf aus Frankenstein tappt durch die Kulissen, er erregt Mitleid und man ist auch belustigt: Die Plateausohlen und die aufgeklebte Stirn – Szeneapplaus wird fällig. Gothic Horror, Spinnenweben, Spukhäuser, Übersinnliches, aber schlechte Lichtverhältnisse. Vincent Price mit hochgezogenen Augenbrauen, ganz als ob er im Theater stünde, steigt durch die samt roten Dekors; wahrscheinlich hatte das Publikum dabei schon in den 60ern seinen Spass. In den 70ern wurde dann alles ruppig und real – für Romantik kein Platz mehr. Zombies und Psychopathen erscheinen auch bei Tageslicht, irgendwie war da auch noch Vietnam, das auf einmal ins Wohnzimmer schwappte... Ein Kino Monster ist wie ein Statthalter der Angst, das wirklich Unheimliche liegt aber hinter dem Monster und nicht in dessen Anblick. Was nun genau unheimlich daran ist, bleibt offen und beantwortet man diese Frage, verliert der Trick seinen Zauber. Sichtbarmachen und Verdecken zugleich, Zeigen und Nicht-Zeigen, so funktioniert Horror. In Tod Brownings Freaks kippen die Gesetze der Angst, seine echten Protagonisten sind wie im Zirkus wirklich behindert. Die Freaks entpuppen sich aber als echte Gemeinschaft, ganz im Gegensatz zu den athletisch schön geformten Menschen, die als wahre Monster entlarvt werden. Angst kommt keine auf, denn Brownings „Monster“ sind dafür zu authentisch und ohne Künstlichkeit funktioniert kein Horror. Horrorfilme sind Zaubertricks, schon die erste Frankenstein Verfilmung rührt von dem Versuch, etwas zum Leben zu erwecken. Eine Puppe geht in Flammen auf und beginnt zu leben – in Wahrheit ein simpler Filmtrick, denn die Szene ist rückwärts gedreht. Der Zuschauer ist permanent auf Spurensuche, entdeckt das Gemachte. Dort, wo er erfolgreich ist, beginnt der Spass und aus diesem Grund gibt’s in dieser Liste klassischer Horrorfilme jede Menge zu lachen, aber auch zu staunen: Nicht das Staunen über die undurchdringlichen Special Effects, sondern die schönen Dekors und phantasievollen Masken  - The light in the cinema goes out and they cavort on the screen, the phantoms of our ego: monsters, doppelgangers, ghosts and vampires, half-beings and artificial humans... Boris Karloff alias the creature from Frankenstein taps through the scenery, he arouses pity and one is also amused: The platform soles and the glued on forehead - scene applause becomes due. Gothic horror, spider webs, haunted houses, supernatural, but poor lighting conditions. Vincent Price with his eyebrows raised, as if he were standing in the theatre, climbs through the red decorations; the audience probably already had fun in the 60s. In the 70s everything became rough and real - no room for romance anymore. Zombies and psychopaths also appear in daylight, somehow there was Vietnam, which suddenly sloshed into the living room... A cinema monster is like a governor of fear, but the really uncanny lies behind the monster and not in the sight of it. What is uncanny about it remains open and if you answer this question, the trick loses its magic. Making visible and concealing at the same time, showing and not showing, that's how horror works. In Death Browning's Freaks the laws of fear are overturned, his real protagonists are really handicapped like in the circus. But the freaks turn out to be a real community, in contrast to the athletically beautifully formed people who are exposed as true monsters. There is no fear, because Browning's "monsters" are too authentic and without artificiality no horror works. Horror movies are magic tricks, even the first Frankenstein filming is an attempt to bring something to life. A doll goes up in flames and begins to live - in truth a simple film trick, because the scene is shot backwards. The viewer is constantly searching for clues, discovering what has been done. Where he is successful, the fun begins and for this reason this list of classic horror films is full of laughter and amazement: not the amazement at the impenetrable special effects, but the beautiful decors and imaginative masks.
