Ist das Leben wirklich nichts anderes als die eigene Sexualität? Oder ist das eine durch das Kabelfernsehen geprägte Sichtweise? Hier erleben wir das leidige Thema einmal ganz anders: Michel Gondrys Debütfilm (nach dem Drehbuch von Charlie Kaufman) zeigt drei Charaktere im Ringen um die eigene Sexualität. Lila (Patricia Arquette) floh in die Wälder, versteckte sich dort, nachdem ihr Körper einen ungewöhnlichen Haarwuchs zeigte: Lila ist über und über mit Pelz bedeckt. Sie wurde zu einer Autorin, die das Leben eines Einsiedlers führt. Letztlich zog es sie aber zurück in die Zivilisation. Warum? Weil ihre Sex-Triebe ihr keine Ruhe mehr liessen! Puff (der tolle Rhys Ifans) wurde als Affe gross gezogen, glaubt auch, er wäre ein Affe und zeigt deshalb die Sexualität eines Affen. Nathan (Tim Robbins) dagegen wurde als Junge strikt darauf hin erzogen, seine Triebe zu unterdrücken. Die Grenze zwischen Triebhaftigkeit und Zivilisation, das ist das Thema von Human Nature. Oder in Nathans Worten gegenüber seines "Schülers" Puff: "When in doubt, don't ever do what you really want to do." Die drei müssen wir uns nun als Menage A Trois vorstellen, ergänzt durch eine schöne (und auch noch französische!) Labor-Assistentin (Miranda Otto). Das Ganze wird von Michel Gondry und Charlie Kaufman als Screwball Comedy aufgeführt, in der Patricia Arquette sogar mit den Tieren des Waldes nackt tanzen darf! In einer früheren Szene erleben wir die Erziehung des kleinen Nathan. Jedes Abendessen im Kreis der Familie lässt uns das Blut in den Adern gefrieren. Benutzt Klein-Nathan das falsche Besteck, muss er den Tisch hungrig verlassen. Später wird er weisse Mäuse trainieren und Puff in einem Glaskäfig verschiedenen Tests unterziehen. Lila schliesslich wird enthaart und lernt Nathan kennen. Natürlich weiss er nicht, dass sie eigentlich eine Pelzträgerin ist und wüsste ers - Nathan würde das ganz bestimmt für unanständig halten! Gondry hatte zuvor Musikvideos gedreht, vor allem die mit Björk wurden berühmt. In gewisser Weise hatte er also bereits Erfahrungen mit solch schrägen Charakteren wie denen aus Human Nature. Sein Debüt ist im besten Sinne leicht und versucht erst gar nicht, ein "grosser" Film zu sein. Bestimmt wäre das Gondry auch noch nicht gelungen. Immer, wenn ich Human Nature in der Filmkunstbar Fitzcarraldo an Kunden verleihe, die mal den ersten Gondry Film sehen wollen, reagieren sie allerdings enttäuscht. Also: Erwarte nicht mehr als eine freundliche Komödie! - Is life really nothing more than your own sexuality? Or is that a view shaped by cable television? Here we experience the tiresome subject in a completely different way: Michel Gondry's debut film (based on the screenplay by Charlie Kaufman) shows three characters struggling for their own sexuality. Lila (Patricia Arquette) fled into the woods, hid there after her body showed an unusual hair growth: Lila is covered all over with fur. She became an author leading the life of a hermit. In the end, however, she was drawn back to civilization. Why? Because her sex drives didn't leave her alone! Puff (the great Rhys Ifans) was raised as a monkey, also thinks he is a monkey and therefore shows the sexuality of a monkey. Nathan (Tim Robbins), on the other hand, was raised as a boy to suppress his instincts. The border between instinct and civilization is the theme of Human Nature. Or in Nathan's words to his "pupil" Puff: "When in doubt, don't ever do what you really want to do." We now have to imagine the three as Menage A Trois, supplemented by a beautiful (and also French!) laboratory assistant (Miranda Otto). The whole thing is performed by Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman as Screwball Comedy, in which Patricia Arquette even dances naked with the animals of the forest! In an earlier scene we experience the education of little Nathan. Every dinner in the family circle makes the blood freeze in our veins. If little Nathan uses the wrong cutlery, he has to leave the table hungry. Later he will train white mice and put Puff in a glass cage to various tests. Lila finally gets depilated and gets to know Nathan. Of course, he doesn't know that she's actually a furrier and he would know - Nathan would certainly think that was indecent! Gondry had made music videos before, especially those with Björk became famous. So in a way he already had experience with such weird characters like those from Human Nature. His debut is easy in the best sense of the word and doesn't even try to be a "big" film. Surely Gondry wouldn't have succeeded in doing that either. Whenever I distribute Human Nature in the film art bar Fitzcarraldo to customers who want to see the first Gondry movie, they react disappointed. So: Don't expect more than a friendly comedy!
