Inherent Vice ist ein Film über einen Kiffer und das Gute daran; der Film scheint selbst bekifft zu sein. Also eine Art The Big Lebowski (DVD6076) der 10er Jahre mit der Atmosphäre, die wir aus den L.A. Filmen der 70er kennen. Inherent Vice ist also so etwas wie ein historisches Portrait der amerikanischen Seele. Vordergründig eine schräge Gauner Komödie, bevölkert mit Exzentrikern, die ihren Manien nachgehen und überhaupt nichts darauf geben, wie sie auf andere Menschen wohl wirken könnten. Selbst-Karikaturen, entstanden unter Alkoholeinfluss. Daraus resultiert der Titel Inherent Vice, der bedeutet, dass Körper ihre Stabilität von innen heraus (nicht durch äussere Einflüsse) verschlechtern. Der Film spielt in Los Angeles 1970 als die Utopie der Hippies langsam in die Gefühllosigkeit der 70er überging. Wer Michel Houellebecq gelesen hat, der kennt diesen Gedanken, wie die Welle des "Summer Of Love" brach und solche Ereignisse wie die Manson Morde einleitete. Im Mittelpunkt steht der kiffende Privat-Detektiv Larry 'Doc' Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix), der am Strand darauf wartet, dass die Flut wieder kehrt. Larry würde keiner Fliege etwas zuleide tun, es sei denn, die Fliege könnte seinen Joint angreifen. Seine Sätze sind zusammenhangslos. Ständig wiederholt er "dig this". Seine Fälle löst er intuitiv, was nicht oft zu sichtbaren Ergebnissen führt. Dig this? Im Gegensatz zu uns allen ist Larry eben nicht nur auf Ergebnisse fixiert. A propos; worum geht es überhaupt in Inherent Vice? Aber das ist nicht die Art von Film, die Wert legt auf eine lineare Handlung. Ein Versuch: Larry wird von seiner Ex Shasta Fay Hepworth (Katherine Waterston) im Büro besucht. Die will von ihm, dass er die Pläne vom Immobilien Mogul Mickey Wolfmann (Eric Roberts) durchkreuzt. Eine weitere Beschreibung scheint unmöglich, denn alles hängt igendwie miteinander zusammen, da Larry nicht über die Strasse gehen kann, ohne einen neuen Fall angeboten zu bekommen. Dabei wiederholen sich Situationen und Bilder auch. Inherent Vice ist vollkommen unübersichtlich. Manchmal bleibt die Handlung auch einfach stehen und einzelne Episoden geraten viel zu lang. Erzählt wird das alles in der dritten Person von Larry Mitarbeiterin Sortilège (Joanna Newsome), die vielleicht auch nur ein Hirngespinst ist. P. T. Anderson, ein grosser Schauspielerinnen Regisseur jedenfalls inszeniert am liebsten so, dass der Geist seines eigenen Films unterlaufen wird. Ergibt das irgendeinen Sinn? Larry jedenfalls wird die ganze Zeit über von dem rechtsextremen Cop Christian "Bigfoot" Bjornsen (Josh Brolin) verfolgt und sowieso scheint jede Menschen-Ansammlung eine Verschwörung zu sein. Auch wenn sich nur drei Menschen treffen. Die Geschichte des kiffenden Deteoktivs und des dämlichen rechtsradikalen Cops ist vielleicht sogar die Liebesgeschichte, inmitten all der albernen Abschweifungen. Das Sonnenlicht in Inherent Vice ist stets vernebelt, genau wie die Wahrnehmung der Charaktere um Larry herum. Sie fragen sich, wo die Zeit geblieben ist und was sie hier eigentlich tun? Sie gehen spazieren, essen, vögeln und warten auf die Flut... Inherent Vice is a film about a stoner and the good thing about it; the film seems to be stoned itself. So it's a kind of The Big Lebowski (DVD6076) of the 10s with the atmosphere we know from the L.A. films of the 70s. So Inherent Vice is something of a historical portrait of the American soul. On the surface, it's a quirky rogue comedy, populated with eccentrics who pursue their manias and don't give a damn about how they might look to other people. Self-caricatures, created under the influence of alcohol. Hence the title Inherent Vice, which means that bodies deteriorate their stability from within (not through external influences). The film is set in Los Angeles in 1970 when the utopia of the hippies slowly faded into the callousness of the 70s. Anyone who has read Michel Houellebecq knows this idea of how the wave of the "Summer Of Love" broke and ushered in such events as the Manson murders. It centres on a pot-smoking private detective, Larry 'Doc' Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix), who waits on the beach for the tide to return. Larry wouldn't hurt a fly unless the fly could attack his joint. His sentences are incoherent. He constantly repeats "dig this". He solves his cases intuitively, which does not often lead to visible results. Dig this? Unlike the rest of us, Larry isn't just fixated on results. Speaking of which, what is Inherent Vice about anyway? But this is not the kind of film that emphasises a linear plot. Let's try: Larry is visited at the office by his ex Shasta Fay Hepworth (Katherine Waterston). She wants him to thwart the plans of real estate mogul Mickey Wolfmann (Eric Roberts). A further description seems impossible, because everything is somehow connected, since Larry cannot cross the street without being offered a new case. In the process, situations and images also repeat themselves. Inherent Vice is completely confusing. Sometimes the plot just stops and individual episodes get far too long. It is all told in the third person by Larry's co-worker Sortilège (Joanna Newsome), who is perhaps just a figment of Larry's imagination. P. T. Anderson, a great actress director at any rate, prefers to direct in such a way as to subvert the spirit of his own film. Does that make any sense? Anyway, Larry is being pursued all the time by the right-wing extremist cop Christian "Bigfoot" Bjornsen (Josh Brolin) and anyway, every gathering of people seems to be a conspiracy. Even if only three people meet. The story of the stoner detective and the dopey right-wing cop may even be the love story, amidst all the silly digressions. The sunlight in Inherent Vice is always fogged, as is the perception of the characters around Larry. They wonder where the time has gone and what they are actually doing here? They go for a walk, eat, fuck and wait for the tide to come in....
