Jedenfalls fast. - The Insider is about how the tobacco industry's lying structure about the "natural" ingredients of cigarette tobacco is revealed through investigative journalism. A classic thriller plot. Might as well be from the best New Hollywood time! The insider is Jeffrey Wigand (Russell Crowe), a former tobacco scientist. But in the center is the reporter Lowell Bergman (Al Pacino) from CBS. He persuades Wigand to talk. A modern investigative hero! This is how it is precisely told in The Insider. At least almost. Bergman finally broadcasts the reportage, which in turn leads to a million-dollar lawsuit. But the pressure of the tobacco industry grows until the show is on. More than just an objection, because Michael Mann's The Insider is after all a thriller! If you read about the true story behind the film, you'll learn that the tobacco industry didn't necessarily send murder threats against Wigand. To make his thriller more effective, Mann embellished the action a little - which is his right. Of course the characters and the story have to be manipulated, because we want to be entertained. But the real hero in Mann's movie isn't Wigand. It's Bergman. Because he passes on the material against the resistance of the station. And because it is played by Al Pacino. Pacino's Job: The embodiment of heroes. Structured, The Insider is like a puzzle game. A puzzle in which individual pieces get lost again and again. The heart is also much less concerned with harmful substances in tobacco than with journalistic ethics. That's why it's good that Bergman is the hero. In any case, Wigand can prove that tobacco contains addictive substances, namely additives. That is exactly what the presidents of the tobacco companies denied under oath. But tobacco is NOT a natural pleasure! The difficulty; Wigand signed a confidentiality declaration and Bergman now has to avoid it. Director Michael Mann demonstrates the feat of showing the long torturous process of investigative journalism AND building suspense! And is there now a contradiction in a thriller that manipulates facts but deals with clean journalism? No! Cinema is about psychological truth and big emotions.
