George Clooney gehört zu den Guten, soviel ist klar. Das beweist erneut seine Babelsberg Produktion The Monuments Men, in der er nicht nur die Regie und Hauptrolle übernahm, sondern auch am Drehbuch mitwirkte. Einer der letzten Weltstars auf den Spuren von Clint Eastwood und Robert Redford. Clooney befindet sich mit Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds oder dem Tom Cruise Vehikel Valkyrie in guter „made in Babelsberg“ Gesellschaft. Seine Gruppe von Kunstexperten auf der Suche nach Beutekunst der Nazis entspringen einer Reihe von Filmen wie The Dirty Dozen (1967), Inglorious Bastards (Quel maledetto treno blindato) (1978) und eben der Tarantino Version: Männergruppen umgeben vom schlimmsten Feind aller Zeiten. The Monuments Men besitzt erhebliche Starpower, der Film ist als lustiges Buddy-Movie und tränenreiches Melodram geniessbar, leider wird aber auch sehr viel geredet. Aus unerfindlichen Gründen schöpft der Film sein Spannungspotential gar nicht aus! Clooney ist vieles, ein neuer Hitchcock aber ist er nicht. - George Clooney's one of the good guys, that's for sure. The Monuments Men has considerable star power, the movie is enjoyable as a funny buddy movie and tearful melodrama, but unfortunately there is also a lot of talk. For some unknown reason the movie doesn't make full use of its tension potential! Clooney is a lot of things, but he isn't a new Hitchcock.
