- (YOU FIND THE WHOLE FILM FREI ON YOUTUBE) If he were even thinner, he wouldn't even exist anymore: Trevor Reznik (Christian Bale), a lonely man. Nobody likes him at work, he can't sleep at night and there are only two people who are nice to him: Stevie, a prostitute and Marie, a waitress in a shop outside at the airport, which is always open. Trevor hasn't slept in a year, he tells Marie. Christian Bale has lost as much weight as Trevor. You have to look twice to see him! So his face ossifies with deep-set eyes that we worry about him more than once. So about the actor. A man trapped in the normal madness of the world! Trevor works as a mechanic. There's probably one like Trevor at every job. One that everyone hates. They find him strange, probably even afraid of him. His boss demands a urine sample from Trevor. Finally a colleague loses his hand because Trevor is distracted. The victim, Miller (Michael Ironside), even reacts less shocked than Trevor - who seems to know his painful future very well. Stevie (Jennifer Jason Leigh) acts as a consolation. Sure, sometimes she has sex with Trevor, but most of all she knows his needs. Trevor reads The Idiot by Dostojewski and who knows - perhaps there are more parallels between Stevie and Natascha than we think at first glance? Marie (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon) has an eye for lonely men like Trevor. She is surprised that he drives out to the airport to drink coffee. I think she would also meet him privately. Then there is the colleague Ivan (John Sharian) - or does he only exist in Trevor's imagination? The end of The Machinist is satisfying in that all the contradictions and secrets of the movie are solved. But the most important thing about The Machinist is not the plot. Director Brad Anderson wants to give us a certain state of mind. Together with Bale he manages this in a most disturbing way: In cold pictures we see Trevor's world through his perspective. An ugly borderline experience!

Christian Bale kaum wieder…
