- Take an absolute minimum of plot and a maximum of elementary action and create an epic out of it. This is how the Australian George Miller develops his vision of an apocalyptic future - not on the basis of dialogues and characters, but on the basis of PICTURES. To this the soundtrack drones and everything you see is aggressive and relentless. Any remnants of civilization are broken away; there is chaos and anarchy. Only cars have remained for the people - and very little petrol. This is what they fight for in marauding gangs. The man of the future murders for gasoline. The cars look like bizarre monsters. With steel posts in front, to which you chain your enemies (then they die first). The warriors on the cars look like enchanted rockers or psychedelic cowboys. They hardly speak. Mad Max aka Mel Gibson says three hundred words or less. He acts like a classic cowboy. His job: to defend the gasoline supplies of good people from the vagrants. They are already surrounded. Mad Max volunteers to drive a tanker of gasoline to the coast. So much for the plot, which is told in so few words that sometimes you have to guess what's going on. Mad Max's heart is a car chase. Mad Max on a semi-trailer truck and around him flies anything you'd like to throw at a Mad Max. In truth, they are gladiators who climb from wagon to wagon and are usually crushed underneath. The whole thing must not be understood as an end time parable. Everything is for sensation! There is no other film like Mad Max 2 The Road Warrior. No film that is so disgusting and so intoxicating!

Miller did the opposite of a
Miller did the opposite of a traditional sequel: narrowed and distilled instead of expanding. The ambiguous, amoral world unexplained. The stoic, silent anti-hero. It works. Overshadowing the original, he finds here the balance between his UNIQUE talent for prop & visual based character storytelling and paced, worthful action that make Road Warrior a fine, iconic western on wheels.
