- Cute they are, but both Mary & Max have it very hard in life. This is all the more unusual because we are in an animated film with clay figures! Mary is eight, she comes from Australia and has a big birthmark on her forehead. Her father stuffs birds (and will soon die), her mother drinks sherry all day long. The only pleasures in Mary's life are chocolate and condensed milk. Mary has no friends. That's why she searches in the distance, in New York's phone book. There she finds Max. Max is already 44 years old and fat. He suffers from autism. His only friend exists only in his imagination, otherwise he visits a self-help group. Mary's letter reaches him with her wish for a letter friendship. She asks a lot of questions, which Max tries to answer. These are questions we have probably asked ourselves before (and forget that we dealt with them). Adam Elliot develops this friendship of two outsiders over years with gentle humor and a lot of freedom for his own imagination. Death, loneliness, illness, alcoholism - Mary And Max is a sad kneading animation film. Fortunately, however, there is the narrator's voice, which always remains optimistic. Through this trick, Elliot (although this is not for children!) succeeds in making Mary And Max a very warm film.

There are a few charming ideas in this oddball animated story of two distance loners who become unlikely friends, but the movies drab, dry, dreary tone suck out all the joy of getting to know these two characters. I found the humor flat and the constant "quirkiness" forced. Mostly though, I absolutely hated the art style which makes everything look lumpy, hideous, and grotesque. This ugly sack of grey gets a D+.
