- Critics often describe films as timeless that are never rented in our video store. Are these really "timeless" classics then? Or just stuff for the boring film university? Surprisingly, even Chaplin films are only rented sporadically - quite unlike "Buster Keaton". Except Modern Times. It goes regularly and well! And I get Modern Times back from sincerely enthusiastic customers. Modern Times stays current. A fable about how man is degraded to a slave at the machine. In 1936, Chaplin's comedy was released, and yet he found a way to remain silent. The mad steel tycoon talks on television - but Chaplin's alter ego is mute and closes itself off to what he calls "Modern Times.

His first talkie fortunately
His first talkie fortunately doesn't have too much talk, but it benefits from Chaplin's score and his wonderful song is sung in a delightful nonsensical mixture of the Romance languages. His confrontation with the modern working world gives the honest origin to his tramp and his night in the department store fills that consumer palace with the properly somnolent spirit where outrageous coincidence is oddly right.
