- At the very end of this captivating documentary, David Bowie explains his view of the world: how man builds his life out of fragments such as family, job, art, politics, etc. We can also understand his approach to music. We can also understand his approach to music in the same way. And that's how David Bowie walked through the world. In university I read Max Frisch and his theory that no one is simply himself, but everyone takes on certain roles. Just like David Bowie, the human chameleon. And that's how Moonage Daydream works, which is much more than a normal music biography documentary. Experience always takes precedence over information in Brett Morgen's film. Don't Bowie's choices as a musician and icon defy rational explanation? So does the film. Moonage Daydream never works to pigeonhole Bowie. Everything here is music, image, editing. Bowie is not explained; instead, his artistic energy is given a new form. This insanely ambitious film is not supposed to work at all - all the more amazing that it does. We realise this immediately, because Moonage Daydream resists a chronology. Instead, it all begins with a track from 1995, to which the film mixes snippets from old science fiction B-movies or Bowie in the dressing room. If you go into this music doc with fairly mundane expectations, you will be thrilled! For me, Moonage Daydream is above all a rush of editing that captures not only the rhythm of the music but also the mood of the era. We are less interested in David Bowie as a person than in his art. What do we feel when we listen to his music? That's exactly what the film captures! We only hear Bowie's voice. He talks about not wanting to waste a single day. That is something quite different from studying in an encyclopaedia how Bowie reinvented himself again and again! Here we realise; it was always about an artist who doesn't want to waste a day, who wants to create something new every day. There are a lot of Bowie songs on here, but it never feels like a greatest hits album. The songs present Bowie for what he was: the filter for pop culture. The ultimate expression of artistic freedom. That's the difference between an EXPERIENCE and a teaching tool. At one point Bowie talks about going into deep water until you can't stand anymore. That is the place for creativity. That's where Moonage Daydream is moving to.
