- Mother! is one of the boldest and most bizarre films ever produced by a major studio! Darren Aronofsky has never said goodbye to making controversial films - but this time he dives so deeply into his metaphysical horror that even for Arronofsky it is a force! Mother! is scary, enigmatic and captivating - and at times Mother! seems completely independent! At its core, Mother! is about male ego, female instinct and the worst thing in the world: people who demand more from you than you can give them. A simple plot basically taking place in a house that burned down not so long ago. Some kind of haunted house. Him" (Javier Bardem) and "Mother" (Jennifer Lawrence) live in it, both are denied names by the film. They are working to rebuild their homes. "Him" was once a famous writer, but he doesn't publish anything anymore. It is completely absorbed in the house, even grown together with it. One night there's a knock on the door. Until then we have noticed that these two people live far away from life, from any civilization. And Arronofsky will do anything to make this remote house look scary! Of course, neither "Him" nor "Mother" expect visitors in this situation. Nevertheless, "Him" opens and "Man" (Ed Harris) enters to spend the night with them. The following day "Woman" (Michelle Pfeiffer) follows. "Mother" hesitates to leave her house to these two, but "Him" seems almost eager to do it. Of course it helps that "Man" is a big fan of the novels of "Him". If I now write that from this moment on everything is still getting weirder, then that is a gross understatement! Here all rules of realism are simply broken! "Mother" puts her hand against a wall and the camera zooms into the building, showing a dying heart. In the hallway you see a blood spatter, but is it real? And there is much more to discover, which one would not have dreamed of before with the best will in the world! At this point the horror friends should be warned, because Mother! is not a classic horror movie. Right at the beginning Arronofsky signals that he is not prepared to follow any rules. The camera follows the protagonists closely and refuses an overview. With limited perspective we stick close to "Mother" - and hardly know what is happening next to or behind her. A conventional horror film is always looking for answers: Who's the killer? Who dies next? Arronofsky, however, bets on confusion. The audience will love or hate Mother! A film made to polarize. One thing is for sure: No matter if you love Mother! or hate it - everyone will talk about this movie! (transl. deepl.com)
