Ein bisschen sieht Cabiria so aus wie eine Comic Figur mit ihren geraden, schwarzen Augenbrauen und ihrem eigenartigen Gang. Oder wie ein Zirkus-Clown, der zur Vorstellung marschiert. Vielleicht ist das ihr Schutz gegen die Schrecken dieser Welt: Der Mantel des Clowns. Eines aber wissen wir sicher; Cabiria ist mehr Heilige als Hure. Wer sie nicht kennt, mag denken, ihr Gang und ihre Art zu sprechen sind gekünstelt. Cabiria aber trägt all das mit Stolz zur Schau, wenn sie durch die Gassen Romas flaniert. Denn sie weiss, dass niemand so ist wie sie. Damals erhielt Giulietta Masina einen Oscar für ihre Cabiria, aber trotzdem wird die DVD von euch nur selten geliehen. Nights Of Cabiria ist jedoch beim besten Willen kein Neben-Werk Fellinis, sondern einer seiner schönsten Filme! Erinnert dich das nicht an eine gewisse Kino-Legende? Bestimmt absichtlich! So spaziert Cabiria in den Nachtclub. Einmal bemerkt sie, dass sie mit der U-Bahn zur Arbeit fährt. Eine Hochglanz Prostituierte, das ist sie nicht. Eher eine Überlebende der schäbigsten Halbwelt. Eine Berufstätige, ohne den Glamour von Hollywood Huren. Im Industriegebiet besitzt sie eine winzige Hütte und darauf ist Cabiria stolz. Irgendwann wird sie auch den richtigen Mann finden, träumt Cabiria. Ihr Männer-Geschmack aber ist gefährlich, denn gleich zu Beginn des Films will sie einer ihrer "Liebhaber" ertränken. Huren haben Zugang zu sämtlichen Etablissements der Stadt und zu allen gesellschaftlichen Kreisen. Cabiria trifft sich sogar mit einem Filmstar (der sie eine ganze Nacht lang beim Hund versteckt, nachdem sie die Verlobte überrascht). Cabiria glaubt daran, irgendwann erlöst zu werden. Einmal erscheint ihr sogar die Jungfrau Maria. Diese Geschichte filmt Fellini wie ein Dichter. Denn Nights Of Cabiria ist ein Gedicht. Und wie in vielen Fellini Filmen scheint sich Cabiria sogar manchmal zur unterlegten Musik zu bewegen. Doch kann sie erlöst werden? Cabiria sucht einen Hypnotiseur auf, lässt sich in Trance versetzen. Und endlich trifft sie Oscar (Francois Perier), der ihr mit Blumen den Hof macht. Ist Oscar der Richtige? Cabiria ist ausser sich vor Freude - während wir, wie so oft zuvor, an ihrer Naivität verzweifeln... Wie du bemerkst, spielt Night Of Cabiria in der realen Welt des Immer-Noch-Nachkriegs Roms und wirkt doch wie ein Musical. Cabiria glaubt vielleicht selbst an dieses Musical und an eine Zukunft mit Oscar. Sogar ihre starken Augenbrauen beginnen, sich zu wölben. Doch irgendwie kommen wir nicht umhin, uns auch weiterhin riesige Sorgen um sie zu machen. - A little bit Cabiria looks like a comic figure with her straight black eyebrows and her strange walk. She owns a tiny cottage in the industrial park and Cabiria's proud of it. Someday she'll find the right man, Cabiria dreams. But her taste in men is dangerous, because right at the beginning of the movie one of her "lovers" wants to drown her. Whores have access to all establishments in the city and to all social circles. Cabiria even meets a movie star (who hides her with the dog for a whole night after surprising her fiancée). Cabiria believes she will be redeemed at some point. Once even the Virgin Mary appears to her. Fellini films this story like a poet. Because Nights Of Cabiria is a poem. And like in many Fellini films, Cabiria even seems to move to the background music sometimes. But can she be redeemed? Cabiria goes to a hypnotist, lets herself be put into a trance. And finally she meets Oscar (Francois Perier), who courts her with flowers. Is Oscar the right man? Cabiria is beside herself with joy - while we despair of her naivety, as so often before... As you'll notice, Night Of Cabiria is set in the real world of the always-new-war in Rome, yet it seems like a musical. Cabiria herself may believe in this musical and in a future with Oscar. Even her strong eyebrows begin to arch. But somehow we can't help but continue to worry about her enormously.
