Obwohl verarmt, war Paris für Hemingway eine unbeschwerte Zeit, er schrieb in den Cafes und beobachtete die Leute, spazierte durch den Jardin du Luxembourg, sah sich satt an Cezanne und lieh sich Bücher in "Shakespeare & Company". Hemingways Erinnerungen sind die der "vie bohème" an die schillernden 20er. Ganz anders das Paris von Patrick Süskind am Cimetière des Innocents voller Kot und Urin. "Du bist wirklich zum Kotzen." sind die letzten Worten des zusammengebrochenen, von Polizisten erschossenen Gauners Michel und verdichten das Gefühl von Godards kleiner Kinorevolution A bout de souffle (Ausser Atem). Dieses Gefühl überträgt sich auf das Bild der Stadt, das Paris der Nouvelle Vague bekommt etwas Rastloses , Atemloses. Der Film wurde da gedreht wo das Leben ist, ohne Kunstlicht und Kamerastativ. Das hektische Leben der Strassen, der Blick auf den Arc de Triomphe und den Eiffelturm vermitteln ein ganz neues lebendiges Paris. Ein kleines Cafe namens "Deux Moulins" erlangte durch den Film Le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain grosse Berühmtheit. In dem Filmmärchen wird die Metropole zur Märchenstadt verklärt, das mit der Grossstadt nur wenig gemein hat: Ein Paris ohne Autolärm und Touristen voller Nostalgie. Amelie, die Kellnerin in besagtem Cafe lebt in einer Traumwelt und beschliesst eines Tages, nur noch Gutes zu tun. Die kleinen Dinge des Lebens werden in rauschende Bilder verpackt, das Gesicht von Audrey Toutou verbindet jeder mit dem Montmarte und dem Cafe "Deux Moulins". Die Frage, ob sich die Faszination von Paris filmisch festhalten lässt? Ganz bestimmt, denn auf der Leinwand erfährt man viel mehr über die Stadt als wenn man sich ein Ticket kauft und selbst hinfährt. - "If you were lucky enough to live in Paris as a young person, you will carry the rest of your life in the city, wherever you go, because Paris is a feast for life." (Hemingway).
