Seit 1941 durfte man behaupten; Humphrey Bogart ist Sam Spade. Und seit 1941 (und zwar bis weit in die 80er hinein!) sollte John Huston einer der grössten Regisseure aller Zeiten sein! Und seit 1941 sollten Sydney Greenstreet und Peter Lorre eines der tollsten Hollywood Charaktere Paare abgeben! Und seit 1941 gibt es das, was wir als Film Noir bezeichnen. Der Grund: The Maltese Falcon. Er kreierte einen neuen Typus des Helden. Man lernt ihn spätestens in Sams berühmter Rede kennen, nachdem die Femme Fatale Brigid O'Shaughnessy (Mary Astor) wegen Mordes an Sams Partner gefasst wird. Sie bittet ihn, sie vom Gesetz fern zu halten. Er entgegnet: “I hope they don't hang you, precious, by that sweet neck". Wie viele Gäste unserer Videothek können das auswendig? Wie geht's weiter? Genau: "If they hang you, I'll always remember you.”. Futter für Geeks! Sam Spade ist genauso wie sein Name klingt: Kalt und hart. Er erhält die Nachricht, dass sein Partner ermordet wurde und blinzelt nicht einmal mit den Augen. Dafür küsst er die Witwe, sobald er ungestört ist. Er verprügelt Joel Cairo (Lorre), weil der ein parfümiertes Taschentuch trägt. Stösst er eine Drohung aus, lacht er grimmig, sobald er den Raum verlässt. Er mag so etwas. Aber Sam lebt nach einem Code. Sein Partner wurde ermordet. Er muss etwas tun. Ich glaube, er mochte seinen Partner nicht sehr. Genauso wenig wie die "Bullen". Nur seine Sekretärin. Doch wie gelang es, einen so finsteren Typen zum Filmhelden zu stilisieren? Weil wir spüren, dass seine Härte alte Wunden kaschiert. Zerbrochene Träume. Deshalb funktioniert The Maltese falcon auch nicht als Krimi. Weil wir überhaupt nicht an die Handlung denken! Ein schwarzer Vogel, angeblich aus Gold und Juwelen, wurde gestohlen. Nun soll er zurück geholt werden. Na und? Jeder will oder fürchtet den Vogel. Er spielt aber keine Rolle. Es ist auch unmöglich, die Handlung logisch zusammen zu fassen. Im Wesentlichen ist der Film so aufgebaut: Dialog + gewalttätige Szene + Dialog + Dialog. Usw. Natürlich meine ich mit "gewalttätig" nicht etwa eine Verfolgungsjagd. Ich meine damit die Art und Weise wie die Typen aussehen, sich bewegen, miteinander umgehen. Es sind harte Typen, die aus der grossen Depression hervorgehen und nun in den zweiten Weltkrieg ziehen. Ihre Motivation: Gier. Dafür morden sie auch ohne weiteres. Sam arbeitet für eine Stundenpauschale. Er steht ausserhalb des Geschehens. Analysiert. Eigentlich nimmt er gar nicht an der Handlung teil. Ich denke, genau das bedeutet Film Noir. - Since 1941 one was allowed to claim; Humphrey Bogart is Sam Spade. And since 1941 (well into the 80s!) And since 1941 there is what we call Film Noir. The reason: The Maltese Falcon. He created a new type of hero. You get to know him at the latest in Sam's famous speech after the femme fatale Brigid O'Shaughnessy (Mary Astor) is caught for murdering Sam's partner. She asks him to keep her away from the law. He replies: "I hope they don't hang you, precious, by that sweet neck". How many guests of our video store know this by heart? What's the next step? Exactly, "If they hang you, I'll always remember you." Food for geeks! Sam Spade is just like his name sounds: cold and hard. He gets the message that his partner was murdered and doesn't even blink his eyes. But he kisses the widow as soon as he is undisturbed. He beats up Joel Cairo (Lorre) for wearing a perfumed handkerchief. If he makes a threat, he laughs grimly as soon as he leaves the room. He likes something like that. But Sam lives by a code. His partner was murdered. He has to do something. I don't think he liked his partner very much. Neither did the "cops". Only his secretary. But how was it possible to stylize such a dark guy into a movie hero? Because we feel that his hardness hides old wounds. Broken dreams. That's why The Maltese falcon doesn't work as a crime thriller. Because we don't even think about the plot! A black bird, allegedly made of gold and jewels, was stolen. Now it is to be brought back. So what? Everyone wants or fears the bird. But it doesn't matter. It is also impossible to summarize the action logically. Essentially, the film is structured like this: Dialogue + violent scene + dialogue + dialogue. etc. Of course, by "violent" I don't mean a chase. I mean the way the guys look, move, interact with each other. They are tough guys who emerge from the Great Depression and now move into the Second World War. Their motivation: greed. But they also kill without further ado. Sam works for a flat rate per hour. He stands outside the action. Analyzed. Actually, he doesn't take part in the action at all. I think that's exactly what Film Noir means.
