Martin ist 17 Jahre alt, einer dieser Teenager, der sich verloren fühlt. Eigentlich fehlt es ihm an nichts zu Hause - nur sein Vater, der fehlt ihm, seitdem er die Familie verliess. Martin macht sich auf, nimmt sein Fahrrad und fährt hinaus. Vom südlichsten Zipfel Argentiniens, dort, wo er wohnt, durchquert er den südamerikanischen Kontinent. Buenos Aires steht unter Wasser (wer erinnert sich noch an die katastrophale Flut?) - doch der Staatschef springt mediengerecht grinsend mit Schwimmflossen ins Wasser. Martin entdeckt die Mythen des Kontinents; die Geschichte der Azteken und der Indios, aber auch die schlimmen Zustände der Gegenwart. Auf der Suche nach dem Vater durchforstet er den Kontinent, trifft auf ein schönes Mädchen in rot am Strassenrand. Es ist einer dieser wahren Kinomomente als Martin sie hinten drauf nimmt... Fernando E. Solanas, der Altmeister des argentinischen Kinos, hat einen Film gemacht, der auch von einem 25jährigen stammen könnte. Er versteht Martin, in seiner Enge, mit seinen Sehnsüchten! El Viaje verbindet surrealistische Sequenzen mit politischen. Manchmal fühlt man sich wie in einem Traum, dann wird man mit den ökologischen und sozialen Problemen der Gegenwart konfrontiert. Ein poetisches Werk und bestimmt der umfassendste Film zum südamerikanischen Kontinent überhaupt! Solanas findet, es gibt kein schöneres und rebellischeres Alter als das mit siebzehn. Martin sets off, picks up his bike and rides out. From the southernmost tip of Argentina, where he lives, he crosses the South American continent. Buenos Aires is under water (who remembers the catastrophic flood?) - but the head of state jumps into the water with his flippers, grinning and media-appropriate. Martin discovers the myths of the continent; the history of the Aztecs and the Indians, but also the terrible conditions of the present. Searching for his father, he trawls the continent and meets a beautiful girl in red on the roadside. It is one of those true cinema moments when Martin takes her on the back... Fernando E. Solanas, the old master of Argentine cinema, has made a film that could also have been made by a 25 year old. He understands Martin, in his narrowness, with his longings! El Viaje combines surrealistic sequences with political ones. Sometimes one feels like in a dream, then one is confronted with the ecological and social problems of the present. A poetic work and the most comprehensive film about the South American continent ever! Solanas thinks there is no more beautiful and rebellious age than seventeen. We believe him!
