Dazu gehört eine eigene Band, The Rutles, welche die Musikhistorie jenseits der Beatles noch einmal neu erzählt. Der Titel wurde übrgens von Eric Idles Post Monty Python Serie Rutland Weekend übernommen. Schon zuvor waren die Beatles und Monty Pythons eng miteinander verlinkt, so dass Eric Idle einfach auf das gemeinsame Bindeglied Neil Innes und seine phantastischen Musicals zurückgriff. Paul McCartney wiederum hatte die Hitsingle der Bonzo Dog Band aus dieser Show produziert. Alles klar? Innes jedenfalls war überzeugt, dass die Rutles Hits genauso die Charts erklommen hätten wie die der Beatles. Zumindest 1964. Eine gewichtige Rolle spielt George Harrison, der wiederum später das Monty Python Projekt Life Of Brian finanziell retten sollte. Aber das ist eine andere Geschichte. Halb in der Realität verankert und halb abgedriftet in die Welt der Phantasie, mit einer Vorliebe für Details und Hintergrundwitze - so funktioniert Idles Film. Fantasy liefern natürlich die Manager Leggy Mountbatten und Arthur Sultan, ihrerseits die Rutles Gurus. Beeindruckend ist die Anzahl von Stars, die aufgeboten wird. Mick Jagger in Höchstform und Bill Murray als New Yorker DJ! Alle Beatles mochten den Film übrigens. Ausser Paul McCartney. Mick Jagger in top form and Bill Murray as New York DJ! All the Beatles liked the film, by the way. Except Paul McCartney. Of course.
