Akkordeon Musik muss man nicht mögen. Das Akkordeon ist der Inbegriff von Folklore und signalisiert: Hier kommt was Regionales! Ich liebe Akkordeon Musik, weil sie etwas Märchenhaftes hat. In Arizona Dream hört man sehr viel Akkoredeon Musik. Ein Song heisst Besame Mucho und wir hören ihn immer und immer wieder. Ich konnte diese musikalische Schleife aber verzeihen, heisst doch die Spielerin Lili Taylor, stets mit einer Zigarette, locker im Mundwinkel. Hier kommt ein Film mit wundervollen Ansichten: Schildkröten, die durch Fleischklösschen kriechen. Der Selbstmord eines Bungee Seils. Johnny Depp. Ein Hund, der einen Mann vor dem Tod in der Arktis rettet. Die Wangenknochen von Faye Dunaway. Jerry Lewis. Hier ist ein Rettungswagen zum Mond im Bereich des Möglichen. Das Hollywood Establishment hat Jahre gebraucht, um ein System zu entwickeln, dass die Industrie vor Filmen wie diesem beschützt. Kusturica hat Arizona Dream dennoch gemacht und der Film ist ungeheuer bekloppt geworden! Niemand, weder wir Zuschauer, noch die Figuren auf der Leinwand, können voraussehen, was als nächstes kommen wird. Kusturicas Welt ist voll von seltsamer Magie. Hier wollen die Menschen fliegen und manchmal können sie es auch. Exzentrik wird belohnt! Bis zu Arizona Dream hatte ich geglaubt, Kusturicas Zauber sei nur in Filmen möglich, die in seiner Heimat spielen: Jugoslawien. Er findet diese Reize aber auch in Arizona. Womöglich liegt das auch an der Akkordeon Musik? Johnny Depp spielt einen Fischverkäufer aus New York: "Most people think I count fish, but I don't. I listen to their dreams." Sein Cousin Paul (Vincent Gallo) überredet ihn dazu, nach Arizona zu kommen, um in das Autogeschäft des Onkels Leo (Jerry Lewis) einzusteigen in der Nähe von Tucson. Eigentlich mag er Onkel Leo nicht, da der den Geruch von billigem Eau De Cologne ausstrahlen würde und hat nicht vor, lange zu bleiben. Als er aber die reiche Witwe Elaine (Faye Dunaway) erblickt, geschieht so etwas wie eine Anziehung, die gravitativ wirkt. Er verbringt seine Zeit auf der Ranch voll glühender Lust, während die Tochter von Elaine (Lilli Taylor) Akkordeon spielt. Was nun geschieht? Rettungswagen, Schildkröten, der Selbstmord eines Yo-Yos... Kusturica hat seine ganz eigene Vision von der Welt. Die ist komplett verrückt und womöglich besser geeignet für ein geduldiges Publikum aus früheren Zeiten als für diejenigen, die möglichst viel Bewegung für ihr Geld sehen wollen. - You don't have to like accordion music. The accordion is the epitome of folklore and signals: Here comes something regional! I love accordion music because it has something magical about it. In Arizona Dream you hear a lot of accoredeon music. One song is called Besame Mucho and we hear it over and over again. But I was able to forgive this musical loop, as the player's name is Lili Taylor, always with a cigarette, loosely in the corner of her mouth. Here comes a film with wonderful views: Turtles crawling through meatballs. The suicide of a bungee rope. Johnny Depp. A dog saving a man from death in the Arctic. The cheekbones of Faye Dunaway. Jerry Lewis. Here is an ambulance to the moon in the realm of possibility. It took the Hollywood establishment years to develop a system that would protect the industry from movies like this. Kusturica still made Arizona Dream and the movie went crazy! No one, neither we viewers nor the characters on the screen, can predict what will come next. Kusturica's world is full of strange magic. Here people want to fly and sometimes they can. Eccentricity is rewarded! Up to Arizona Dream I had believed that Kusturica's magic was only possible in films set in his homeland: Yugoslavia. But he also finds these charms in Arizona. Perhaps this is also due to the accordion music? Johnny Depp plays a fish seller from New York: "Most people think I count fish, but I don't. I listen to their dreams." His cousin Paul (Vincent Gallo) persuades him to come to Arizona to join uncle Leo (Jerry Lewis)'s car business near Tucson. Actually, he doesn't like uncle Leo, because he would radiate the smell of cheap Eau De Cologne and doesn't intend to stay long. But when he sees the rich widow Elaine (Faye Dunaway), something like a gravitational attraction happens. He spends his time on the ranch full of ardent lust, while Elaine's daughter (Lilli Taylor) plays the accordion. What happens now? Ambulances, turtles, the suicide of a yo-yo... Kusturica has his very own vision of the world. It's completely crazy and probably better suited for a patient audience from earlier times than for those who want to see as much movement as possible for their money.
