Luc Besson scheint von dem Gedanken besessen zu sein, dass man Menschen von der Strasse holen könnte durch Bildung. In Leon ist es ein zwölfjähriges Mädchen, die wiederum ihrem Ausbilder, Leon, das Leben und Schreiben beibringt. Sie selbst lernt, zu töten. Frage: Können wir es einfach ignorieren, dass Matilda erst zwölf ist? Oder wirkt der ganze Film dadurch beunruhigend? Virtuos fliegt die Kamera durch die Strassenschluchten New Yorks und verharrt vor einem Teller Nudeln. Hier isst der Mafia Pate (Danny Aiello), der gerade einem dieser wilden Menschen von der Strasse einen Vertrag anbietet: Leon (Jean Reno), der so schnell tötet, wie sonst niemand. Gleich zu Beginn des Films erleben wir ihn bei der Arbeit. Mit grimmiger Effizienz. Bald schon wird er Matilda (Natalie Portman) adoptieren. Sie dürfen wir getrost als "streetwise" bezeichnen. Matildas Familie wurde von einem korrupten Polizisten namens Stansfield (Gary Oldman) eliminiert. Und Stansfield will auch sie töten. Um den Tod ihres kleinen Bruders (wohl bemerkt, nicht den ihrer Eltern!) zu rächen, heuert Matilda Leon an. Als Bezahlung will sie seine Wäsche machen. Leon winkt ab, aber Matilda lässt sich nicht abwimmeln. Sie will auch "Cleaner" werden. Nun beginnt die Geschichte eines Paars auf der Flucht. Eines Paars mit einem Altersunterschied von 30 Jahren. Wer damals Leon im Kino sah, wusste, dass Natalie Portman zum Star werden sollte! Ihre Matilda ist stärker als Leon. Sie gibt den Ton an. Leon wurde an den schäbigsten Orten in New York gedreht, darf aber trotzdem als Märchen genossen werden. Als romantische Fantasie. Irgendwie sah New York auch nie europäischer aus, oder? In dieser Fantasie darf Matilda Leon in wenigen Tagen das Lesen beibringen. Genauso ist Leon in der Lage, sich vor Hundertschaften von Polizisten zu verstecken und sie alle umzulegen. Luc Besson inszeniert das mit seinem virtuosen Stil, der seine Action geradewegs ins Drama führt. Irgendwann vergessen wir glatt, dass Matilda erst zwölf ist. Das aber ist schlecht. Schlecht, zu vergessen, dass hier ein zwölfjähriges Mädchen liebt und lernt, zu killen. - Luc Besson seems to be obsessed with the idea of getting people off the streets through education.
