Eine Theatergruppe erlebt die reine Lebensfreude, Romantik - und gelegentlich auch eine Entlohnung. Hier kommt ein Road Movie von Federico Fellini! Fast stutzen musste ich, als ich bemerkte, dass Fellini hier sogar kooperierte. Der Neuling teilte sich die Regie mit dem bereits im Neorealismus etablierten Alberto Lattuada. Auf die Frage hin, wer denn nun eigentlich der Regisseur war, antwortete Fellini einmal, dass sie beide den Film für sich beanspruchten. Immerhin spielt Luci del varietà in der Welt, die Fellini am meisten liebt und zu der er immer wieder zurückkehren sollte: Die Welt der zweitklassigen Schausteller. Hier sind sie wieder, seine verblendeten Träumer und die ewige Verlockung des Showbusiness! Der Impresario Checcho del Monte (Peppino De Filippo) und seine Truppe stellen ihre Kunst auf der Strasse zur Schau. Wir lernen nicht nur den Komödianten Checcho kennen, sondern auch einen Imitator oder einen phantastischen Entertainer. Unvergesslich, Fellinis Frau Giuletta Masina als Checchos untertänige Freundin. Checcho selbst, ein ausgereifter Egoist, der nur für den Applaus des Publikums lebt. In diese durchaus glückliche Gruppe trifft nun die Schönheit vom Lande Liliana (Lattaudas Ehefrau Carla Del Poggio). Sie wird nicht nur zum Star der Show, sondern auch zum Objekt von Checchos Begierde. Wie er sie verfolgt und gedemütigt wird, bestimmt von nun an den Fortgang der Handlung - denn natürlich ist Liliana nicht so unschuldig wie es scheint... Besonders sympathisch: Die grosse Liebe zu den Schaustellern, ja die Nachsicht mit der sie gezeigt werden. Wie sie sich vor einem gelangweilten, ja schlafenden Publikum abarbeiten und immer an ihrem Traum festhalten. Wie Helden werden sie hier vorgeführt, aber auch die Allerweilts-Gesichter des Publikums bleiben im Gedächtnis. Die Schattenseiten dieses Lebens blendet der Film einfach aus. Luci del varietà ist ein Ensemble-Film, der das Ganze über die einzelnen Individuen stellt. Manchmal wünschte ich mir etwas mehr von Giuletta Masina, deren Genie erst in späteren Fellini Filmen voll entfaltet werden soll, aber das ist Fellnis Anliegen hier noch nicht. Wer eine klare Narration erwartet, wird hier noch nicht bedient. She becomes not only the star of the show, but also the object of Checchos desire. How he is persecuted and humiliated, determines from now on the progress of the plot - because of course Liliana is not as innocent as it seems... Especially sympathetic: The great love for the carnies, even the indulgence with which they are shown. How they work their way through in front of a bored, even sleeping audience and always hold on to their dream. Like heroes they are presented here, but also the Allerweilts faces of the audience remain in the memory. The film simply ignores the dark sides of this life. Luci del varietà is an ensemble film that places the whole above the individual individuals. Sometimes I would like to see a little more of Giuletta Masina, whose genius will only be fully developed in later Fellini films, but this is not Fellnis concern here yet. Those who expect a clear narration will not be served here yet. But the world of the showmen is definitely worth a look!
