Unser Kollege Thomas Groh freute sich riesig als er die DVD von The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg auspackte und ins Regal stellte. Ein Musical, in dem ausschliesslich gesungen würde, freute er sich. Doch obwohl Jacques Demys dritter Spielfilm wichtige Preise einheimste und besonders in Amerika gefeuert wurde, blieb er in unserer Videothek unbeachtet. Wie sollte man The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg verleihen? Indem man euch, den Kunden, erklärt, dass es ein Schlüsselwerk der Nouvelle Vague ist und ausserdem der internationale Durchbruch von Catherine Deneuve? The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg ist eine Romanze zwischen Genevieve (Deneuve), der schönen Tochter der örtlichen Besitzerin des Regenschirm-Ladens und Guy (Nino Castelnuovo), einem armen, aber gut aussehenden Auto-Mechaniker. Guy und Genevieve befinden sich im Vollrausch ihrer ersten grossen Liebe, so dass sie trunken die Strassen entlang schweben. Ihre Gefühle sind so gross, dass sie niemals nur ausgesprochen werden könnten in normalen Kino-Dialogen. Sie müssen gesungen werden! Jedoch ist Genevieves Mutter Madame Emery (Anne Vernon) ganz pragmatisch und glaubt nicht an das Glück ihrer Tochter mit einem Mechaniker. So ein Glück hat schliesslich keine Perspektive! Deshalb wählt die Mutter den Juwelier Roland (Marc Michel) für Genevieve. Alles ändert sich jedoch als Guy zum Krieg nach Algerien einberufen wird. Genevieve und Guy verbringen ihre letzte Nacht miteinander und tun das, was Menschen in so einer Situation eben machen. Es folgt das Unvermeidliche: Während Genevieves Bauch immer grösser wird, schreibt Guy seiner Geliebten immer seltener. An diesem Punkt tritt Roland auf und heiratet Genevieve... Das Schönste an Demys Musical ist die Tatsache, dass sein grosses, tränenreiches Finale an einer Esso Tankstelle spielt. Aber es ist doch fast unmöglich, The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, in dem keine einzige Zeile gesprochen, sondern nur gesungen wird, zu beschreiben. Demys frühe Filme sahen noch so aus wie Werke der Nouvelle Vague. Dieser, sein dritter streich dagegen entfernt sich komplett von jedem Realismus und leuchtet strahlend als radikaler Kunstgriff. Und die Farben leuchten wirklich so atemberaubend, dass man sich auch darauf einlassen muss! The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg ist nicht einfach nur ein romantisches Musical. By explaining to you, the customers, that it is a key work of the Nouvelle Vague and also Catherine Deneuve's international breakthrough? The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg is a romance between Genevieve (Deneuve), the beautiful daughter of the local umbrella shop owner, and Guy (Nino Castelnuovo), a poor but handsome car mechanic. Guy and Genevieve are in the throes of their first great love, so much so that they float drunkenly down the streets. Their feelings are so great that they could never just be expressed in normal cinema dialogue. They have to be sung! However, Genevieve's mother Madame Emery (Anne Vernon) is quite pragmatic and does not believe in her daughter's happiness with a mechanic. After all, such happiness has no perspective! Therefore, the mother chooses the jeweller Roland (Marc Michel) for Genevieve. Everything changes, however, when Guy is called up for the war in Algeria. The most beautiful thing about Demy's musical is the fact that its grand, tearful finale takes place at an Esso petrol station. But it's still almost impossible to describe The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, in which not a single line is spoken, only sung. Demy's early films still looked like works of the Nouvelle Vague. This, his third strike, on the other hand, departs completely from any realism and shines radiantly as a radical artifice. And the colours really do glow so breathtakingly that you have to go for it! The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg is not just a romantic musical. It is the dream of a romantic musical!
