Was macht Robert Altmans Nashville zu einem grossen, ja einzigartigen Film? Und wovon handelt Nashville eigentlich? Ist es die Tatsache, dass diese Frage nicht beantwortet werden kann, der Grund, der Nashville so gut macht? Robert Altman selbst schrieb anlässlich der DVD Veröffentlichung, dass es sich um ein Musical handelt. Stimmt! Aber auch ein Doku-Drama über die Musikszene von Nashville und eine Polit-Parabel. Wir erleben die Grand Ole Opry am Tag von Nixons Rücktritt. Altman verwinkelt gekonnt seine Geschichten von Liebe & Sex und gebrochenen Herzen. Nashville ist eben auch ein filmisches Gedicht an alle, die verletzt wurden, die traurig sind! Die tollsten Figuren: Lily Tomlin als Hausfrau, die ihre tauben Söhne liebt. Der einsame Soldat. Der alte Mann, der um seine gerade verstorbene Frau trauert. Und natürlich der schmierige Country Sänger (Henry Gibson)! Nashville zeigt die Stadt über einen Zeitraum von fünf Tagen, während der Vorwahlen zum US Präsidenten. Wir erleben den Kandidaten Hal Phillip Walker, der von dem ABC Nachrichtenmann Howard K. Smith unterstützt wird. Am schönsten der Schlagabtausch von Smith mit ein paar Studenten: "Does Christmas smell like oranges to you?" Michael Murphy verkörpert John Triplette, der eine Wahl-Ralley organisiert. Ned Beatty gibt einen lokalen Richter, der dabei hilft. Triplette will die Country Legende Barbara Jean (Ronee Blakley) dazu bewegen, auf der Ralley zu singen (doch ihr Mann hat etwas gegen Politik). Eine ganze Reihe von "Drifters" ist unterwegs. Einer von ihnen heisst Tom Frank (Keith Carradine). Er macht die von Tomlin verkörperte Hausfrau an, ruft sie abends zu Hause an. Es schmerzt uns, da wir wissen, wie übel ihre Ehe läuft. Ihr Mann macht nicht einmal den Versuch, die tauben Söhne zu verstehen. Teilnahmslos lässt er seine Frau übersetzen, obowohl ihm der eigene Sohn mit leuchtenden Augen von seinen ersten Erfolgen beim Schwimmen berichten will. Am Ende treffen alle aufeinander im Country Club und diese typische Altman Atmosphäre entsteht: Irgendwie wirkt Nashville so wie eine Party! 25 Sprechrollen bietet er uns an und alle bekommen ihre Szenen voller Tiefe und Anteilnahme. So viele Hauptrollen Altman vorführt, so viele Themen gibts! Subtil, welche Bedeutung die Country Musik für die Einzelnen hat. Im DVD Kommentar erfährt man, dass die meisten Songs tatsächlich von denen komponiert wurden, die sie vortragen. Die Songs bilden aber nur die Oberfläche. Darunter verbergergen sich Politik und Romantik. Alle Charaktere sind miteinander verbunden, oft durch unerwartete Wendungen. Die einzelnen Geschichten aber folgen keinem konventionellen Plot. Aber verläuft das Leben wirklich linear? Oder doch genauso chaotisch wie in einem Robert Altman Film? - What makes Robert Altman's Nashville a great, unique film? And what is Nashville actually about? Is it the fact that this question cannot be answered that makes Nashville so good? Robert Altman himself wrote on the occasion of the DVD release that it was a musical. That's right! But also a documentary drama about the Nashville music scene and a political parable. We see the Grand Ole Opry on the day of Nixon's resignation. Altman skilfully twists his stories of love & sex and broken hearts. Nashville is also a cinematic poem to all who have been hurt, who are sad! The greatest characters: Lily Tomlin as a housewife who loves her deaf sons. The lonely soldier. The old man mourning the loss of his recently deceased wife. And of course the greasy country singer (Henry Gibson)! Nashville shows the city over a period of five days during the US presidential primaries. We see the candidate Hal Phillip Walker, who is supported by the ABC news man Howard K. Smith. Most beautiful the exchange of blows of Smith with some students: "Does Christmas smell like oranges to you? Michael Murphy personifies John Triplette, who organizes an election rally. Ned Beatty gives a local judge to help. Triplette wants to get country legend Barbara Jean (Ronee Blakley) to sing on the rally (but her husband has something against politics). A lot of "Drifters" are on their way. One of them is called Tom Frank (Keith Carradine). He turns on the housewife played by Tomlin, calls her at home in the evening. It hurts us because we know how bad her marriage is. Her husband doesn't even try to understand the deaf sons. He has his wife translated apathetically, even though his own son wants to tell him with bright eyes about his first successes in swimming. At the end everyone meets in the Country Club and this typical Altman atmosphere is created: Somehow Nashville seems like a party! He offers us 25 speaking roles and everyone gets their scenes full of depth and sympathy. So many leading roles Altman performs, so many themes there are! Subtle about the importance of country music for the individual. The DVD Commentary tells you that most of the songs were actually composed by those who perform them. But the songs only form the surface. Among them are politics and romance. All characters are connected with each other, often by unexpected twists. The individual stories, however, do not follow any conventional plot. But is life really linear? Or just as chaotic as in a Robert Altman film?
