Dieser Londoner Film Noir verbindet den schwarzen Sumpf der Nacht UND den Dschungel der Grossstadt. Und der hat bekanntlich ein brutales Eigenleben entwickelt! Ein Titel voller reiner, harter Poesie! Der zugrunde liegende Roman von Gerald Kersh aus dem Jahr 1938 war bester Pulp. Im Mittelpunkt Harry Fabian (Richard Widmark) ein Dieb, betrüger und Zuhälter aus Soho mit falschem amerikanischen Akzent. Ganz bestimmt der am liebevollsten gezeichnete Kleingangster aus allen britischen Thrillers der Naschkriegszeit (und das will wirklich was heissen!). Fabian ist darüber hinaus ein ethnisch radikaler Charakter. Ob seines Namens wissen wir; Fabian muss jüdisch sein. Wer mehr darüber lesen möchte, erfährt, dass in Soho eine starke jüdische Gemeinde gab. Dieser ganze Background jedenfalls macht Fabian zu einer echten Kino Ikone! Und natürlich braucht jeder Eintreiber von Schutzgeld auch ein Territorium zum Ausbeuten! Fabian darf also als Pendant italo-amerikanischer Mafioso gelten (und wer noch mehr darüber lesen mag, der erfährt, dass es natürlich reale Fabians in Soho gab!). Für die Herstellung des Films importierte man damals übrigens nicht nur Regisseur Jules Dassin, sondern die gesamte Belegschaft aus Hollywood. Man stellte sogar zwei Versionen her Night And The City: Eine für den britischen Markt und eine für den Rest der Welt. Die Kritiker betrachteten Dassins Film Noir übrigens nie als echten Klassiker. Das änderte sich erst in den 90ern, im Zuge der Tarantino-Welle. Endlich gab es ein Publikum für echten Pulp! Die Welt der Kleinkriminalität und der Moral der Strasse waren salon-fähig geworden! Im Nachhinein ein Glücksfall: Dassin musste Hollywood während der McCarty Ära den Rücken zukehren, dadurch traf das Studio-System auf den britischen Pulp-Thriller. Ein britischer Film mit amerikanischem Herzen! -

This London film noir connects the black swamp of the night AND the jungle of the big city. And, as you know, it has developed a brutal life of its own! A title full of pure, hard poetry! The underlying novel by Gerald Kersh from 1938 was best pulp. In the center Harry Fabian (Richard Widmark) a thief, cheater and pimp from Soho with false American accent. Definitely the most lovingly drawn little star from all the British thrillers of the Naschkrieg period (and that really means something!). Fabian is also an ethnically radical character. Whether we know his name or not, Fabian must be Jewish. If you want to read more about it, you will learn that there was a strong Jewish community in Soho. All this background makes Fabian a real cinema icon! And of course every collector of protection money also needs a territory to exploit! So Fabian can be considered the counterpart of the Italian-American Mafioso (and if you want to read more about it, you'll find out that of course there were real Fabians in Soho!). For the production of the film, not only director Jules Dassin was imported, but also the entire staff from Hollywood. They even produced two versions of Night And The City: one for the British market and one for the rest of the world. The critics never regarded Dassin's film Noir as a true classic. That only changed in the 90s, in the wake of the Tarantino wave. Finally there was an audience for real pulp! The world of petty crime and street morality had become salonable! A stroke of luck in hindsight: Hollywood had to turn its back on Hollywood during the McCarty era, so the studio system met the British pulp thriller. A British film with an American heart!
